Frieren: The Mural of the Unified Dynasty Explained!

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End has perfectly combined Japanese fiction’s artistry with Western fiction’s tropes to create a wonderful fantasy work that is extremely popular worldwide, and for a good reason. So far, we have mostly discussed characters that appear in the series, some locations, as well as concepts, but his article is going to be dedicated to a piece of history as we are going to go back in time and discuss the Unified Dynasty once again, as we are going to explain the mural that Frieren, Fern, and Sense discovered in one of the hidden chambers inside the Ruins of the King’s Tomb in the series.
The mural (or relief) seemingly tells the story of the first unified King
In case you’ve forgotten, the Unified Dynasty ruled in the distant past. The dynasty’s name suggests that some aristocrats or kings joined forces to form a stronger family that would dominate their realm. We presume that they ruled over all or part of the North. However, this has not been proven. Although no specifics have been disclosed, the Ruins of the King’s Tomb indicate that a monarch from this Dynasty may have been interred here; the fact that we are dealing with ruins here further implies the antiquity of the Unified Dynasty.
The Unified Dynasty had the King’s Tomb built, but we don’t know which ruler was buried there. The Ruins themselves are a complex maze that has not been conquered up to this day, mostly because of Spiegel, but also because of their complexity. There are many hidden chambers and treasures inside, but also many dangers, so adventures don’t really go there too often, which is why they have become a legendary location, so to speak. But, this is exactly why Frieren enjoyed them, and it was her discovery that leads us to the principal question of this article.
Namely, after exploring almost everything inside the Ruins, Frieren deduced that there had to be another secret chamber, although there was nothing on the outside to indicate that. Still, she was able to find a secret portal hidden behind a large wall by magic. Behind it was a secret chamber with a beautifully preserved, large mural of the Unified Dynasty. Upon seeing it, Sense commented how it was a major discovery, and both Fern and Frieren were very happy to have found it. So, what did the mural depict?
The mural (or relief) showed an unidentified king, probably the first ruler of the Unified Dynasty, in the center; as the Mages deduced, the mural depicted his achievements and lauded them. He had, on both sides, a pair of knights, horses, and trees, implying that all the known species revered him as their ruler. From this, we can deduce that the mural depicted the first king of the Unified Dynasty, the one who was able to unite all species (humans, animals, and plants) under his rule, thus starting an important era in the history of lore.
The mural also depicts an angelic being, a female with wings and a crown, standing by the king’s side; this could either be the Goddess or one of her emissaries, which means that the King also had a divine blessing of his rule, according to the mural. This is more or less expected, as the king buried in the tomb was obviously an important and relevant figure, so it shouldn’t surprise us that his rule also had the blessing of the Goddess.
And this is, more or less, it. We have explained what you need to know about the mural in the Ruins of the King’s Tomb, as well as provide you with an interpretation of the scene depicted on it. And with this, we can actually wrap up this article, as the story that we wanted to tell you has come to an end.
