Frieren: Who Is Gorilla Warrior, Sein’s Friend, & What Happened to Him on His Adventure?

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End has perfectly combined Japanese fiction’s artistry with Western fiction’s tropes to create a wonderful fantasy work that is extremely popular worldwide, and for a good reason. While the protagonists are the story’s focus, in this article, we will discuss another character whose role in the series might be minor, but it is important in understanding Sein’s story. The character in question is Sein’s childhood friend, Gorilla, whose story and whereabouts are a big part of Sein’s story and his decisions. In this article, we are going to tell you everything we know about Gorilla in Frieren and will help you understand what happened to him.

Gorilla is Sein’s childhood friend, his best one at that

While he was being sucked into the bottomless swamp, Sein told Frieren his life story, hoping that she would help him; she did, but it was a hilarious scene, we have to give credit to the authors for coming up with such a great scene in the first place. So, he told her how he ended up there, but he also told her about his childhood and about his friend. He compared him to a gorilla, although that is not his name, and since then, the character in question has been called Gorilla (for lack of a better name).

So, who is Gorilla? Gorilla is a boy from Sein’s village who is roughly his age. They spent much time together as children, playing and fooling around by climbing trees, walls, and whatnot. They shared a common dream at the time – to become adventurers. Both were intent on doing it, but Sein refused when they grew older and the time came to set off on their first adventure. This is due to various circumstances we have explained in our texts about Sein and his brother, but he rejected Gorilla’s hand and stayed in the village.

Gorilla was not angry with him and told him that he would come back to the village in three years’ time that he would then offer him his hand once again, and that he could reconsider then and join him on his adventures. He was a major influence on Sein and a true friend to him, that was obvious, and Sein has been regretting his decision ever since, wondering what had happened to Gorilla. And this brings us to our next section.

It is unknown what happened to Gorilla

A big issue in Frieren is what happened to Gorilla. We know that he left on an adventure alone and that he was supposed to be back in three years, but it’s now been ten years and no one has heard of him in that time period. So, what happened to Gorilla? No one really knows.

At one point, Sein conjectured that Gorilla was probably dead since no one had heard from or of him in ten years, but this has not been confirmed in the story. Officially, his status is “unknown,” which means that he might be alive but also that he might be dead. We know that Sein joined Frieren’s party to search for him, but they parted ways at one point, and we don’t know what happened to Sein then and whether he was able to find (anything about) Gorilla.

As for our theories, we’re really not sure. Sein seems to be a relatively important character, so we do think that the story will be resolved in the manga in one way or another, but since the manga is ongoing – we cannot predict how and when. It might be that Sein finds Gorilla and that the two of them meet Frieren at one point in the story, but it might also turn out that Gorilla is really dead. Frieren has its own specific way of telling the story, and it is truly beautiful, but with the manga still being published, we’ll just have to wait and see what happens to Gorilla.
