Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End has perfectly combined Japanese fiction’s artistry with Western fiction’s tropes to create a wonderful fantasy work that is extremely popular worldwide, and for a good reason. While the protagonists are the story’s focus, in this article, we will discuss another character whose role is that of a secondary character but is wholesome enough for us to tell you more. The character in question is Sein’s unnamed older brother, the priest in their village. In this article, we will tell you all you need to know about him and his skill in the series.

  • Article Breakdown:
  • Sein’s older brother, who remains unnamed, is a priest in their village with a certificate from the capital that was gave him by Heiter. The two brothers were left orphaned, so he was the one who took care of Sein.
  • To enable his younger brother to remain in their hometown, he rejected Heiter’s offer to go to the Capital and be a master healer there.
  • The priest is quite skilled, as Heiter attests, but at one point, Sein surpassed his skills and abilities, although the older brother remains a Priest, while Sein became a Mage.

Sein’s older brother took care of him and remained in their village because of that

The story of the priest in Sein’s village is connected to Sein himself because – as we find out – the priest is Sein’s older brother. This was revealed when Frieren and Fern brought Stark to be healed, and suddenly, Sein appeared, calling the priest “brother,” thus revealing the connection, which was a surprising and quite interesting revelation, as Sein seemed to be quite random when this story began.

We soon find out that the two of them ended up being orphaned and that the priest had to take care of Sein, so it was he who raised him. At one point, Heiter visited their village (he was old at the time) and was impressed by the brother’s skills. He offered to take him to the capital, where he could hone his skills and become even better. And while the brother was certainly skilled enough to go to the capital, he refused, saying that life had already taken Sein’s family and that he would not want to rob him of his hometown as well.

Heiter was not overjoyed, but he understood and stated that he would remain there for a while to tell Sein about his adventures, aware that Sein had been eavesdropping on their conversation. Before leaving, he awarded the brother with a golden medallion, which was an official acknowledgment that the brother was a brilliant and skilled priest, as awarded by someone who had ties to the capital.

And that is where the two brothers remained and where Frieren’s party found them when they arrived in the village. He later said that he never regretted his decision to stay in the village and urged his brother to become an adventurer and fulfill his dream.

Although skilled, he has been surpassed by Sein at one point

Now, what remains to be said about the brother is his skill level. We know that when Heiter first came to the village, he was so impressed by his skills that he offered to come to the capital and hone them. Sein also spoke highly of his brother’s skills, and from what could be understood, the villagers were also happy; he also had a medallion that certified that he was a skilled priest and healer.

But, when Frieren and Fern brought Stark to him, while he was able to quickly identify the poison, he was unable to do anything about it, stating that they had brought him too late and that he would die. At that moment, Sein appeared and healed Stark in a moment, showing his impressive skills – he was able to, in a second, heal a poison that a master healer said was incurable and fatal.

So, how skilled is the priest actually? Well, Sein seems to be a master healer, and since he is a Mage, he has access to different techniques than his brother. The fact that Sein is a better healer than his brother doesn’t mean that the brother is not skilled. He is just not on such a level in this aspect. Saying that someone is weaker than Frieren doesn’t imply that they are weak, as Frieren is simply on another level. So, we would say that the brother is quite skilled, but Sein simply managed to surpass him.
