Frieren: Who Is Lügner & What Happens to Him?

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is a manga and anime series currently among the most popular anime airing. Written by Kanehito Yamada and illustrated by Tsukasa Abe, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is a truly lovely fantasy series with great characters, and in this article, we will discuss one secondary villain that appeared recently in the anime. The character in question is a demon called Lügner, who appeared in Graf Granat’s domain, seemingly as an envoy of peace but as a villain with a vile plan. In this article, we will discuss Lügner and tell you about his role in the series.
Save for Qual, who was a remnant of the past, Lügner is the first proper demon that Frieren’s party met in the present
So, as Frieren, Fern, and Stark continue their journey, they arrive at the town governed by Graf Granat. Initially, it all seems like just another typical stop for them, but then, suddenly, Frieren summons her staff and prepares for battle in the middle of the street. No one knows why, but soon a group of three demons appears; they are talking to Graf Granat, and their leader is a noble-looking, blonde-haired demon who is soon introduced as Lügner (btw, in German, the word “Lügner” means “liar,” so you can deduce a lot about him from just that).
So, Lügner has a very noble attitude. He is dressed nicely and has blonde hair, pale skin, and a pair of horns, just like a humanoid demon should have. He seems to be aware of his surroundings but is nevertheless always calm (even when Granat threatens to slay him with a sword) and does not get excited, even in the face of danger. He speaks very pleasantly, which he uses to manipulate those around him, but it turns out that he is actually quite deceitful, a liar, and wants to stab Graf Granat in the back.
Like all demons, he simply imitates human speech to deceive them, but he doesn’t really understand the true meaning of his words. Having said all of this, let us see his true plans in the series and what happened to him.
Why did Lügner come to Graf Granat? Was he deceiving him?
Now that we have introduced Lügner, we can tell you about his role in the story. Continuing from our introduction, Lügner asked Graf Granat whether he had instructed Frieren to attack and kill him, but while the nobleman said that he hated Lügner and would like to see him dead, he had nothing to do with Frieren. The Elf is then imprisoned, while Lügner is free to leave.
Frieren later explains that Lügner is a villain. When Stark tries to tell her that it might not all be that bad, as Lügner seems civilized, Frieren explains that demons cannot actually talk in the same way as humans but that they only imitate human speech because, for them, it is a way of deceiving humans.
Thus, all demons are liars, and as Frieren said, Lügner was also simply a monster who lied his way through the story, but his ultimate goal was to trick Granat; he can speak and use human words, but he does not really understand them and prefers to simply use them because he knows that they will affect people. That is why Frieren was certain that Lügner was a liar.
And she was right. When left with his two associates, Lügner confirmed that Frieren was the only one who correctly interpreted him and his role in the village and that she was their only threat. As he revealed, his goal was to soften Graf Granat enough so that he would lower the village’s defenses, which would ultimately allow the demonic troops of Aura the Guillotine to raid it and destroy it completely. This ultimately proved that he was a blatant liar and that his only goal was to trick Graf Granat.
He even mentioned his “father” to soften Granat up, claiming that he also killed his father and did not want to see any additional blood being shed. When Linie asked him what a “father” was, he said that he did not know but that it was a “magical world” that demons could use to make humans lower their guard, showing how deceitful and vile he was.
So, will he succeed? We won’t be spoiling too much for you here, but we will tell you that Lügner’s plan won’t play out as he wants it to play out. The details will be revealed very soon in the anime, so we won’t be spoiling it all for you here, but we can confirm that Lügner won’t be coming out alive from the story. What happens? Keep watching Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End to find out, or check out the manga for more information.
