Garp vs. Whitebeard: Who Is Stronger & Who Would Win in a Fight?
The number of characters in One Piece is so big that the selection of characters for our usual comparisons is amazing. Whether it’s a hero or a villain, there is always someone we can use to write a great comparison, and in this article, we are going to do just that for you. Monkey D. Garp, Luffy’s grandfather, and a Vice-Admiral, will be one of the characters, while the other will be the legendary Captain Whitebeard. Who is stronger, and who would win? Keep reading to find out!
Whitebeard is more powerful than Garp and would win a fight against him. Garp is physically powerful, and his resilience is truly amazing, but he simply wouldn’t be able to come out on top against Whitebeard, who was known as the strongest man in the world. Whitebeard was strong. He was skilled with weapons and in the use of Haki, and he also had a Devil Fruit, which means that he far surpassed Garp in almost every category. It would be an amazing fight, but Whitebeard would ultimately triumph over the Marine Vice-Admiral.
What follows, of course, is a detailed analysis of the answer we have given you above. We will portray Monkey D. Garp and Whitebeard in more detail, giving you a thorough analysis of the issue at hand and the balance of power between the two characters using our usual formula. Through several categories, you will see who the stronger of the two is and why our answer is like it is, i.e., why we’re certain that Whitebeard is stronger than Garp at this point of the story.
Physical abilities
Garp’s fists are extraordinarily powerful. In fact, they are so strong that with just one punch, he can hurt Luffy and make him feel pain. Moreover, during the War, he was able to hurt Marco even when he was in his Phoenix form. He claimed to have crushed a total of eight mountains in his training for Chinjao.
Garp also has extraordinary energy and an outrageous tolerance for pain, as shown when he was attacked by Captain Morgan and survived a cut from his ax. Garp has demonstrated to have exceptional speed (he is, potentially, quicker than even CP9’s Soru), as shown when he was able to elude every Straw Hat and reach Luffy to wake him up.
During his lifetime, Whitebeard was known as the strongest man in the world. While he was becoming older, his physical strength was still far greater than a giant’s. He had been the strongest for more than twenty years. He also possessed incredible stamina, which allowed him to defeat the Admiral despite taking numerous gunfire, cannonballs, sword slashes, and stabbings from Squard, Akainu, Kizaru, and other enemies.
Despite his deteriorating condition, Whitebeard was still regarded as the world’s toughest and most dangerous pirate. He managed to sneak up on Akainu, and the latter didn’t notice until other troops told him to peek behind him. This demonstrated his ability to move swiftly.
Even though Garp is a true powerhouse, and his physical strength is his biggest asset, we simply cannot give him any points here, as Whitebeard was a true monster in this category, and he far surpassed even Garp; he basically surpassed everyone in that aspect, so there isn’t much to add here.
Points: Garp 0, Whitebeard 1
Devil Fruit
Monkey D. Garp is one of the rare characters that are on such a high level of power but don’t have any Devil Fruit powers. Monkey D. Garp never ate a Devil Fruit in his life, which is why, ultimately, we don’t have anything additional to say as far as this category is concerned, at least when Monkey D. Garp is in question.
After eating the Gura Gura no Mi, a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit, Whitebeard could slice through the air and anything in his path of attack. He could then cause earthquakes and tsunamis to occur by seizing the air with his fingers and slashing enormously large areas of land and sea. He could also utilize this ability to make cutting attacks by fusing it with his Bisento.
Its loud tremors enable it to withstand Aokiji’s freezing as well. The Sabaody Archipelago also experienced tsunamis as a result of Blackbeard’s actions, who, after seizing Whitebeard’s powers, never mastered the fruit’s powers and skills, which shows just how strong the Devil Fruit was, how powerful Whitebeard was for being able to control it.
This is a fairly easy one as well, as we all know what we have to do here. Garp has no Devil Fruit, whereas Whitebeard not only had one, but he had one of the most powerful ones in the series, and that is why he has to win this point.
Points: Garp 0, Whitebeard 2
Haki
Because Garp is a Vice Admiral, he can use Haki, as it is a condition, seemingly. Garp can use Observation Haki. Dr. Fishbonen advised Koby to ask Garp for help learning Observation Haki as he awoke because he has the expertise to help others. Garp has repeatedly hurt Luffy despite the latter’s rubber body, proving he is a skilled Armament Haki user. He has also shown that he can use Conqueror’s Haki in a recent battle with Kuzan, demonstrating his extreme rarity of wielding all three varieties of Haki.
Whitebeard has managed to fully master all three types of Haki. In flashbacks with Ace, his highly developed mastery of Observation Haki is demonstrated, as Whitebeard easily defeats him while he is dozing off. He also appears to have imbued his Armament Haki into his Bisento, allowing him to destroy boats or perhaps small settlements. Against Admirals, Whitebeard has regularly used his Armament Haki. According to Fossa, Whitebeard utilized the Conqueror’s Haki during the Battle of Marineford. When Newgate and Gol D. Roger fought while traveling together, they would use it regularly.
This is a category where Garp will finally get his point, as both characters are known for being able to use all three types of Haki. In light of that fact, we are not going to nitpick here, as we will simply split the points in this category.
Points: Garp 1, Whitebeard 3
Weapons
Garp has been observed firing cannonballs until now (including a gigantic one). His fists may also be used as a weapon, but that’s about it regarding his proficiency with weaponry. He is similar to Luffy in that he doesn’t use weapons and relies on his physical strength (and Haki) rather than any other special abilities. Although he is certainly better with weapons than Luffy, who is terrible at it, we do not believe that he is one of the series’ top weapon users.
His Bisento, a massive Japanese halberd that he called Murakumogiri, was Edward Newgate’s preferred weapon. Murakumogiri was a very big weapon that matched Whitebeard’s height of almost five meters. Whitebeard can knock dozens of opponents out of the way with a single strike by focusing his Haki on his Bisento.
The Bisento is a completely terrifying weapon, but when used in conjunction with Whitebeard’s incredible strength and fighting skills, it is almost always fatal for everyone. This one enables him to compare himself to Shanks’ saber as evidence, which, during their duel, tore an atmospheric-type tear in the sky.
The final point goes to Whitebeard, not simply because he is better than Garp in this category, which he undoubtedly is, but also because Garp’s proficiency with weapons is generally not that great and is certainly not his forte. That is why the final point goes to Whitebeard.
Points: Garp 1, Whitebeard 4
Whitebeard is a tough opponent for anyone, but Garp wouldn’t stand much chance in the long run
Our point-based system confirmed, and we can only agree that Whitebeard does, by far, surpass Monkey D. Garp. Sure, we cannot deny that Garp is exceptionally powerful in more ways than one and could be a match for many characters in the series, but Whitebeard is definitely not one of them.
Whitebeard was a monster, as the points demonstrated, as he won a point in every category, while Garp only obtained one because both of them can use all three types of Haki. Even in terms of physical strength, which is Garp’s forte, Whitebeard surpasses the Marine Vice-Admiral.
Ultimately, there is absolutely no doubt that Whitebeard would take this one, and that is what the points confirmed, as well as what we agree with in our conclusion, and that is why our answer is like it is.
