Goblin Slayer: Who Are Hero, Sword Saint & Sage and What Are They Doing in Hell?

GOBLIN SLAYER! is a dark fantasy and adventure light novel series that focuses on a young and inexperienced Priestess who wants to become an adventurer but lands in trouble as goblins wipe out her first party; she is saved by the mysterious Goblin Slayer, a brutal murderer of goblins, whom she then joins as they adventure together. This article won’t focus on any of the protagonists but rather on three characters currently in Hell – Hero, Sword Saint, and Sage. In this article, we will tell you what they are doing in Hell and why they are important for the story of GOBLIN SLAYER!.

Hero, Sword Saint, and Sage are members of the same party and are among the most celebrated adventurers

In the first section of this article, we are going to introduce the three heroines who are the focus of this article. All three of them – Hero, Sage, and Sword Saint – are members of Hero’s Party and are among the most celebrated adventurers in the whole series. This is why we deem it necessary to tell you a bit about them before we actually explain what they are doing in Hell.

Hero, the leader of the group, is a young adventurer who, for defeating the Demon Lord, became the most recent adventurer to reach platinum rank. When she was little, she lived in an orphanage where Goblin Slayer, who had recently become an adventurer, had stayed temporarily. She is one of the strongest adventurers in the world, but despite this, she infinitely respects the Goblin Slayer’s work as she knows the horrors the goblins could do if there were no people like him to keep them at bay.

In the light novel series, the chapters are sometimes interrupted by short narrations of the adventures of Hero and her companions. Later, it turns out that the gods had chosen her since she was born to be their champion. However, they had planned to make her stronger by making her live a difficult childhood, destroying the orphanage in which she lived: a sin that they used the goblins to attack the orphanage, so Goblin Slayer intervened, saving everyone.

As for Sage, she is the mage of the group. Not much is known about her background, as the series has focused on her adventures with Hero and Sword Saint more than anything else. She is considered the strongest and most skilled mage in the whole series. She has a very serious personality and her voice has been described as cold, although she herself is not evil or anything similar to that – she is just very focused on the task at hand and is aware of her skills and abilities.

Finally, we have Sword Hero, who is the fighter of the series. Like in Sage’s case, we don’t really know much about her past, as the story focused primarily on her adventures with Hero and Sage. She is a gold-ranked adventurer, which means that she is quite skilled. She is generally headed, and is very protective of her fellow party members, and the latter can often lead to her acting out hasty, even though she is generally level-headed.

And with this, the basic introduction is over, and we can now continue with the story of how these three heroines are related to Hell.

The three of them fought the forces of Hell to keep them from escaping

Now that we have told you the story of these three heroines, you might assume that they are relatively important secondary characters and that they do have a solid background. But, this article never wanted to analyze their whole stories, as it would require an individual(istic) approach to each of them, but rather – it wanted to focus on one specific moment that actually happened recently in the anime and which saw the three heroines end up in Hell. Knowing their history with the Demon Lord and his demons, it doesn’t really come as a surprise that the Hero’s Party ended up in Hell, but let us see what happened exactly.

Namely, at one point in the series, the Gates of Hell were opened; this happened in Volume 7 of the light novel. Of course, someone was there to save the day, and it was the Hero’s Party, the three powerful adventurers who saved the world before arriving once again to save the world, as the demons threatened to overflood the world after escaping through the Gates of Hell.

Sage, who is – as we have said – known as the most powerful mage in the series, worked on sealing the gates, while Hero worked hard on killing the Demons, and she was more than successful in doing it. Before the gates were closed, she faced the giant spider creature and defeated it with relative ease, with a strong critical hit, and that was basically it. The gates were soon closed, and the three heroines once again saved the day, thus proving how invaluable they are for the story of GOBLIN SLAYER! and why they actually deserved a standalone article.
