‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ Trailer Breakdown: One Last Ride for the Weirdest Family in the Galaxy

It’s been four years since we last saw the Guardians of the Galaxy in the MCU and six years since their last standalone film. This May, the strangest family in the galaxy returns for one last round. James Gunn has confirmed that this will be his last Marvel film, given that he has already taken over as co-CEO of DC Studios and is currently working on another attempt by DC to build an established cinematic universe the way Marvel did years ago.
The Guardians of the Galaxy first joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a relatively unknown group of oddballs who faced massive threats to the entire galaxy. First, they fought Ronan the Accuser, then Ego the Living Planet, who also happened to be Star-Lord’s father, and then they fought on the biggest battlefield possible against Thanos for the entire universe’s future. We saw them last year in Thor: Love and Thunder, but this team’s post-Avengers: Endgame status is still something that this next and final film will have to deal with.
James Gunn previously said that we can expect a huge and very emotional film that will conclude the Guardians trilogy and say goodbye to some of the most beloved heroes we’ve met in the MCU. We’re not saying that some members of the team won’t return in future MCU projects, but this movie will still close a big chapter of the MCU. Gunn teased that not all group members would survive this final run, so this would surely be the end of this team as we know it.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3′ Trailer Breakdown
Quick recap
One great thing about this trailer is that it didn’t give away much about the plot of the movie, so there are still a lot of questions about what and how everything will actually happen in this movie. The trailer opens with Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord giving us the fastest possible overview of everything he’s been through before the events of this movie. He founded the Guardians, met a girl, and fell in love. But that girl died, and later she came back, and now he met her again, and things are definitely not the same. Well, as Nebula said, he may have left out some important parts, but that’s pretty much it.
Even before this film started production, it was obvious that in Vol. 3, we would see the reunion of Star-Lord and Gamora. After Gamora was killed in Avengers: Infinity War, Zoe Saldana reprised the role in Avengers: Endgame, thanks to time travel and all. Still, this new Gamora is from 2014, and she doesn’t know everything that Star-Lord and the now-deceased Gamora experienced before Thanos came to ruin the day. Of course, that won’t stop Star-Lord from doing whatever he can to win back the woman he loves. This is sure to be an important part of the movie, and even though Gunn promised us emotion and sadness by the end of the movie, we hope that Star-Lord and Gamora will find their happy ending. After everything that happened with their families, they deserve it.
A new look at High Evolutionary, Rocket’s origin story
As previously announced, the High Evolutionary will be one of the villains in this film. Chukwudi Iwuji, who previously worked with James Gunn on the Peacemaker series, has now joined the MCU as a villain whose plan is to create a perfect society. In the first trailer, he was portrayed as a mad scientist who likes to abuse others for his own gain, and this new trailer now gives us more insight into his motivations.
The new thing this trailer showed us was that the High Evolutionary played a role in Rocket’s origin story because it basically made him who he is now. But as Rocket said, he didn’t want to make things perfect. He just hated them the way they were. This will surely make Rocket one of the most important Guardians, and as things stand right now, it wouldn’t surprise us if Rocket is indeed the Guardian who doesn’t survive the end of this movie. We hope not, but we can’t deny those teases.
Adam Warlock vs. Drax
Adam Warlock’s MCU debut was teased from the post-credits scene of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. The first trailer for Vol. 3 gave us our first look at Will Poulter’s Adam Warlock, and this new trailer showed us a bit more about how he fits into the story. But one thing that’s particularly interesting about him in this new trailer is the quick scene where he fights Drax.
From what we’ve seen, aside from Rocket, Drax seems like the second-best “candidate” to say goodbye to the franchise in a tragic way. We don’t know how the story with the villains will develop further, considering that Adam could become one of the good guys by the movie’s end, but that’s just a theory for now. Some arguments that could be considered as to why Drax could die in this movie is that Dave Bautista has said this is his last Marvel movie. When we look at it, the entire story of Drax was built on the fact that his wife and daughter were killed before the first film’s events. We wouldn’t be surprised if Gunn pulled some “eventually, he’ll be with them again” with Drax if you know what we mean.
We will all fly away together…
The trailer showed us dozens of new shots from the film, but the best we can see from them is that this film will have a stunning visual design, which is not surprising since we’re talking about Marvel. We have to give it to this trailer because it managed to show a lot, but at the same time, we don’t know much more than what we knew before this movie even started its marketing campaign.
We wouldn’t be wrong to call this movie Guardians of the Galaxy: Endgame because that’s exactly what this movie is. One last chapter for the second most famous MCU team (after Avengers, of course) is upon us, and we have no doubt that Guardians will say goodbye to this franchise and its fans with a bang.
Written and directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be released on May 5, 2023.
