HBO’s ‘Lanterns’ Just Dropped New Footage, And Fans Are Bracing For A Much Darker Back Half
The DC Universe has spent the past year building out its television side, and ‘Lanterns’ has quickly become one of the more unusual entries in that expansion. Rather than leaning into cosmic spectacle, the series has positioned itself as a grounded, detective-style drama, with Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart cast as intergalactic cops investigating a murder in America’s heartland. That premise, paired with heavyweight creative talent behind the scenes, has made the show one of the most closely watched DCU projects of the year.
Much of that attention comes down to who is steering the ship. The eight episode HBO series brings the pair into James Gunn and Peter Safran’s expanding DC Universe, with early coverage describing the tone as closer to a hard boiled detective drama than a traditional cosmic superhero story, set largely in Nebraska around a mentor and rookie relationship. It is a bold swing for a franchise built on ring slinging space cops, and it set expectations high before a single frame had aired.
That anticipation is exactly why the latest update matters. DiscussingFilm, the film focused account known for breaking DC and Marvel news, shared word that a new trailer covering the remaining episodes of ‘Lanterns’ had gone live, pulling in nearly ten thousand likes within hours as fans scrambled to parse the footage for fresh clues.
The timing lines up with the show’s already busy release calendar. ‘Lanterns’ premiered on HBO Sunday nights with new episodes rolling out weekly, running from August 16 through October 4, with each installment landing on HBO Max at the same time as its television broadcast. With the season already underway, a trailer focused specifically on the remaining episodes suggests HBO wants to keep momentum building rather than let the show coast on its premiere buzz.
Part of that buzz stems from just how unconventional the season premiere turned out to be. In an interview with DiscussingFilm, co-creators Damon Lindelof and Tom King confirmed that Hal dies in the very first episode, a choice Lindelof described as creating a necessary reset so the series would not feel like the characters simply went on an adventure without anything really changing. It is a gutsy move for a character introduced to a mass audience for the first time, and it immediately reframes what the “remaining episodes” trailer might actually be teasing.
Lindelof has also been candid about the creative headaches that come with writing characters who can conjure anything they imagine. Speaking to SYFY Wire, Lindelof said the challenge of almost every single scene is explaining why the characters are not simply using their rings to solve the problem in front of them, which forces the writers to build character driven reasons to restrain what are essentially godlike abilities.
Looking beyond season one, Lindelof has indicated that a writers room for future seasons under showrunner Chris Mundy has already begun exploring where the story could go next if the show connects with audiences. That kind of forward planning, combined with a mid season trailer drop, points to a series HBO is betting will stick around.
With Hal Jordan already gone and John Stewart left to carry the ring, what do you think this new footage is hiding about ‘Lanterns’ back half?
