He-Man Is Heading Back to Animation This Summer With a Brand-New Free-to-Watch Reboot
Few properties from the 1980s have clung to cultural relevance quite like ‘Masters of the Universe.’ What began as a Filmation animated series in 1983 introduced young audiences to the heroes and villains of Eternia, with the story of Prince Adam and his transformation into the virtually unstoppable He-Man cementing itself firmly in pop culture history.
The most recent chapter in the property’s animated legacy came through Netflix, where Kevin Smith’s revival aired between 2021 and 2024, keeping the world of He-Man in the conversation for nostalgic viewers and newer fans alike. Now, with a major live-action blockbuster on the immediate horizon, Mattel is making clear it has no intention of letting the franchise sit idle between releases.
A brand-new animated reboot of ‘Masters of the Universe’ has been officially confirmed to launch on June 10, arriving exclusively on YouTube, adding yet another dimension to what is already shaping up to be a landmark summer for the property.
Writer and director Matthew Brown confirmed his involvement through Instagram, sharing that he had spent the past six months developing the project for Mattel. His LinkedIn profile refers to the series as ‘Masters of the Universe: Tales from Eternia’ and notes a 20-episode run, though Mattel has yet to make any official title announcement of its own.
The series was first signaled publicly through The Toy Book magazine, where Mattel’s Nick Karamanos, Senior Vice President of Entertainment Partnerships, placed the launch within a far broader strategy. Karamanos, speaking to The Toy Book, described the animated release as part of “a multiyear MOTU roadmap,” with Mattel focused on sustaining the property’s momentum for kids well beyond the theatrical window.
That film, directed by Travis Knight and starring Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man alongside Jared Leto as Skeletor, is set to open in theaters on June 5, just five days before the animated series makes its YouTube debut. Carrying an estimated production budget of around $170 million, it marks the most ambitious step the franchise has taken since its original 1980s peak, with Mattel clearly invested in building a full entertainment ecosystem rather than relying on the film alone.
The decision to launch ‘Tales from Eternia’ free on YouTube is a calculated one, designed to draw in younger viewers who may have no connection to the classic show while giving longtime fans something to hold onto between now and their trip to the theater. If you grew up with He-Man and have watched this franchise evolve through every reinvention since, does a free YouTube series feel like the right way to usher in this new era for Eternia?
