Helen Mirren’s Loyalty Speaks Louder Than Any Firing Report in the ‘MobLand’ Chaos

Few crime dramas have generated as much off-screen intrigue as ‘MobLand‘, the Paramount+ hit that quickly established itself as one of streaming’s most-watched shows. The British series premiered in March 2025 and became Paramount+’s biggest global series launch, drawing 2.2 million viewers on its opening day. Built around a murderous London crime dynasty, it assembled one of the most formidable casts on television, with Tom Hardy leading the charge as fixer Harry Da Souza opposite Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan as the imperious Harrigan family.

Created by Ronan Bennett, the show was renewed for a second season shortly after its debut, with production wrapping in March of the following year. The ensemble earned both audience devotion and critical attention, and the buzz around a potential third season seemed like a natural next step for a show riding such momentum. What nobody anticipated was that the drama behind the camera would soon rival anything unfolding on screen.

The controversy erupted when Puck News initially reported that Hardy had been fired from the Paramount+ crime drama as a result of his behavior on the set of the recently-filmed second season. That report claimed Hardy was repeatedly late to set, offered unsolicited scripting suggestions, and upset executive producer Jez Butterworth so much that he threatened to quit the show. A source then told The Hollywood Reporter that Hardy refused to come out of his trailer for hours at a time, describing the alleged behavior as a power play, and adding that keeping Pierce Brosnan, Helen Mirren, and others waiting was career suicide.

That last detail carried a particular sting, given how warmly Hardy had spoken about his costars just weeks earlier. In an April 2025 interview with Parade, Hardy called the experience of working with Mirren and Brosnan “wonderful,” describing them as brilliant actors and saying it was “an absolute joy” to share the set with them. The contrast between those glowing words and the subsequent reports of trailer standoffs was not lost on observers watching the story unfold in real time.

Then came a development that cut through the noise far more effectively than any press statement could. On May 28, the Oscar-winning actress, who plays Maeve Harrigan on ‘MobLand’, shared a photo of Hardy to her Instagram account along with a heartfelt message that read, “Love you now and always,” before signing it simply, “Helen.” Notably, this was not the first time Mirren had made a public display of support for Hardy. Back in December, when earlier rumours of a feud had hit headlines, she shared a photo of her costar alongside a list of her likes and dislikes, writing that she loved him for “his brilliance onscreen, his dedication off screen, his good heart.”

The timing of the latest post was deliberate in its simplicity, and the internet responded accordingly. Adding another layer to the story, Variety reported that Hardy was not officially fired from ‘MobLand’ and that discussions were actively underway for his possible return, with a production source noting that director Guy Ritchie was likely pushing for a resolution. If ‘MobLand’ does receive a third-season greenlight, production is tentatively set to begin in September of this year.

Whether Hardy ultimately returns to the Harrigan fold or not, Mirren’s quiet two-line Instagram post may have done more for his reputation than any official statement. The entire saga has kept ‘MobLand’ at the center of the cultural conversation even without new episodes on screen, and fans of the show are now as invested in what happens behind the scenes as they are in what plays out on it. What do you think, does ‘MobLand’ work without Tom Hardy at the center of it, or is Harry Da Souza simply too essential to the show’s DNA to write out?
