Here Are 10 Best DCEU Movies According to Fans
The DCEU began with ambitious plans to mirror the success of the MCU. Warner Bros. envisioned a decade-long strategy to bring some of DC Comics’ most iconic characters to the big screen.
Although the films were financially successful, Zack Snyder’s darker vision did not resonate with audiences, leading to the eventual dissolution of the DCEU in favor of James Gunn’s rebooted DCU. Despite some movies being considered failures, the DCEU did deliver several memorable superhero hits. Because of this, fans have flocked to Ranker to vote for their top 10 DCEU movies. Let’s dive into their selections.
10. ‘Blue Beetle’ (2023)
“Blue Beetle” was one of the final films released under the DCEU banner, spotlighting the superhero of the same name. While it didn’t draw huge audiences to theaters, it was a solid film with heartfelt family themes and a great portrayal of the character. The exciting news is that Blue Beetle will continue his journey in an upcoming animated series that will be part of the DCU!
9. ‘Black Adam’ (2022)
I’m not entirely sure if “Black Adam” would make it into my top 10, but it did signal that the DCEU was running out of time to make a comeback. Additionally, it marked the beginning of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s push for changes in DCEU leadership. Despite its high-octane action sequences and impressive star-studded cast, the film fell short of expectations and ended up being a notable box-office flop.
8. ‘The Flash’ (2023)
I personally enjoyed “The Flash,” so I’d rank it a bit higher on the list. However, many viewers were unhappy about Ezra Miller reprising the role amid legal troubles, leading them to boycott the film. Additionally, those who weren’t bothered by Miller’s portrayal still chose not to watch the movie, as it was already known that the DCU would be replacing the DCEU. Still, the film did bring back Michael Keaton as Batman, which is definitely a highlight.
7. ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ (2016)
Though it was heavily memed and initially received mixed reactions, fans eventually came to appreciate its darker, brooding themes. It’s also the film that introduced us to Wonder Woman. Given its impact, it definitely deserves its place on this list.
6. ‘Shazam!’ (2019)
“Shazam!” was a major success for the DCEU as it marked the first time a C-list character was given a solo film and it succeeded. The movie’s light-hearted, humorous tone distinguished it from the darker superhero films in the franchise, and Zachary Levi’s portrayal of the titular character was a standout feature!
5. ‘Man of Steel’ (2013)
“Man of Steel” marked Henry Cavill’s debut as Superman, but the film faced criticism for having Superman break his no-kill rule. Despite this initial reception, Cavill is now widely regarded as one of the best on-screen portrayals of the character. Given this, it’s a bit puzzling to see this placement on the list.
4. ‘The Suicide Squad’ (2021)
Yes, we’re referring to Gunn’s version here. Unlike the original, which faced criticism for its underdeveloped characters, “The Suicide Squad” provided more depth and backstory for its ensemble cast. Each character was given a distinct role and personality, making them more memorable and engaging. With greater creative freedom and a larger budget, Gunn was able to fully realize his vision, resulting in a film that was both visually and narratively bolder, pushing boundaries in ways the original couldn’t.
3. ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’ (2021)
The original “Justice League” faced numerous challenges during its development, including personal tragedies and on-set issues, and is said to have led Ben Affleck to vow off superhero films. At four hours long, “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” provided a more comprehensive and detailed storyline, offering greater depth to its characters and featuring improved action scenes. Overall, it was a superior film compared to what Joss Whedon delivered.
2. ‘Wonder Woman’ (2017)
The DCEU’s “Wonder Woman” will be remembered for its impressive box-office success and Gal Gadot’s exceptional portrayal of the character. The film delivered an emotional and action-packed origin story, delving into her early life on Themyscira and her path to becoming a hero. It remains one of the most successful superhero origin stories on-screen, and we fully agree with its ranking!
1. ‘Aquaman’ (2018)
No one could have anticipated the immense success of this film, especially given that Aquaman was often more mocked than respected. The movie was celebrated for its breathtaking visual effects and underwater sequences. Director James Wan infused the film with a unique blend of action, adventure, fantasy, and humor. Most importantly, fans flocked to see Jason Momoa’s portrayal of the character. I completely agree with this ranking!
