Zack Snyder is traveling around to talk about his new movie, ‘Rebel Moon – Part 2: The Scargiver’, and he’s been discussing his old movies along the way, both the good and the bad.
Recently, Snyder surprised fans when he said that Batman is dull if he doesn’t kill. However, many disagree because Batman’s character isn’t about killing, and that’s a widely accepted fact.
Snyder recently talked with GQ about his top movies, including ‘Man of Steel,’ which had a mixed reception, with some critics finding it “exceptionally unpleasant.” One major criticism was the fight scene between Zod and Superman, which some fans felt was out of character. Snyder even stated that if Superman couldn’t kill Zod, he would be fake. Yes, he actually said that.
Zod’s not wrong from his point of view, but also, there’s no really room for humans in this scenario that Zod’s presenting and he’s not gonna stop. He wasn’t gonna negotiate an outcome, so it was either Zod or us. And that was pretty much the game. There was no like middle ground. Zod said, “He would fight until either you kill me or I kill you.”
That’s the game. There’s no like, and they’re like, “But why would you put Superman in that position?”
I’m like, “Well, if Superman can’t handle that position, then he’s fake, then he’s not. You gotta like, he’s got to address the scenarios that come to him. He can’t pick and choose as you can’t pick and choose.”
When something is outside of your morality, your normal morality that you can deal with, it’s like the Kobayashi Maru, right, from “Star Trek.”
You know, it’s like the idea that like, you’re presented a scenario, a no-win scenario. And in the no-win scenario, how do you respond?
And I think that if you can respond, if the character can respond in a way that solidifies his humanity, then he’s stronger.
Snyder’s idea might have some merit, but its portrayal in ‘Man of Steel’ fell short. Issues like excessive destruction, weak character development, plot holes, pacing problems, and the lack of humor disappointed many viewers. Combined with such a significant alteration to Superman’s character, the result was a disappointing movie experience.
However, not everything about the movie was negative. Despite these criticisms, the film received praise for its visual style and action sequences, earning support from audiences who enjoyed its innovative approach to the Superman story.
