One Piece: Here’s How Long Luffy Has Been at Sea!

Here's How Long Luffy Has Been at Sea!

Monkey D. Luffy, the protagonist of Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece manga, is known for his many epic adventures. He is one of the best-known anime characters in history, and his adventures are known and followed worldwide. We know that Luffy set off on his adventures on July 22, 1997, when the first manga chapter was released. It has been almost 26 years since that moment, and Luffy is still very active and present in our lives. But how long has it been in the story itself? We know that manga series rarely (almost never) follow the real-world calendar, meaning time passes differently in-universe. In this article, we will try to tell you just how much time Luffy has spent at sea in the One Piece series.

The One Piece timeline is almost impossible to map out precisely because the timeline of some events is impossible to determine. On the other hand, some events’ timelines are known and are easy to determine. Based on the known information, Luffy has been at sea for at least two years and 134 days or about two years and four months, but this was before the conclusion of the Wano Country arc, so we assume it’s somewhere around two years and five months now.

The rest of this article will focus on the chronology of the One Piece series and Luffy’s adventures at sea. We will tell you why it is so difficult to determine the timeline of this manga (although this is an issue present in many shonen works, not just One Piece) and what we could scrape based on the information we have. This article will contain many spoilers, so be careful if you’re not fully up-to-date with the latest happenings in the series.

The timeline of the One Piece series is almost impossible to map out

One general problem with shonen manga is that they do not follow a real-world timeline. Now, that wouldn’t be an issue were the authors more precise in determining their in-universe timelines, but as they are not, fans usually have trouble pinpointing some moments and determining when some events took place (Naruto is infamously known as an example of this). One Piece is a work that does not really stray away from this formula, and while we do know the general idea of the timeline, a precise determination is basically impossible.

In-universe, we know that there are two calendars: the Age of the Sea Circle (海円暦, Kaienreki) and the Age of Heaven (天暦, Tenreki) calendars. If you follow the link we’ve provided, you’ll get more information on each of them and the general One Piece timeline according to these two calendars. It is important to know that these two calendars provide only a rough outline of the events, through which we know that Luffy has been at sea for around two and a half years, but that was obvious from just knowing that we had a two-year time skip in the series. Now, what we are going to do in the next section is try to determine a more precise timeline of the events in the series.

A rough estimate was still possible, though

Now, going through almost 26 years of materials is no easy task, but luckily for us, our friend on Reddit, user adnaphsaka, has been kind enough to go over the manga up until the moment when the raid on Onigashima began, and this is the conclusion and the timeline he was able to construct from the manga info:

As you can see, this is a very precise timeline confirming that Luffy has been at sea for roughly two years and 134 days, or about two years and four months, based on the data collected.

All Straw Hat Pirates That Left the Crew: Ranked by Importance

This is not a fully updated timeline, as it stops when the raid on Onigashima begins, and since the Wano Country arc is over, we assume that the timeline would need a fresh update. But, the Wano Country arc wasn’t that long in-universe, so we assume that the precise number would be around two years and five months now, and that is what we can say about the duration of Luffy’s travels.
