Here’s Where ‘Naruto’ Series Takes Place

Shōnen anime and manga writers always wrote their content to be relatable to their fans. Masashi Kishimoto did a great job with his title character, Naruto, who instantly became a fan favorite and one of the most popular anime characters in the world. However, fans always “dig” deeper into the mythos of Naruto and its setting. The alternate Earth and the Ninja World lore are immensely interesting, so we decided to analyze the setting of the ‘Naruto‘ series.
Where does the ‘Naruto’ series take place?
Now, we know that Ninja World is the main setting of the ‘Naruto’ series, closely resembling rural Japanese small towns and districts. However, Naruto is far from connected to our world. The Naruto universe is set on the fictional terrestrial planet Earth, which has few continents, but the largest one is in the center of the Naruto storyline. In the article where we explained the establishment of hidden villages, we mentioned that the population of the Earth was in an ever-lasting war, and people of the Earth were in constant disarray until Kaguya Ōtsutsuki stopped all the wars on the planet.

She used chakra, and after she had two sons, Hagoromo and Hamura, who also gained her chakra, the mother became hungry for more and decided to bring back more chakra. The Ten-Tailed Beast was born, and Kaguya would have almost destroyed the whole world if her sons hadn’t intervened and sealed her with the special jutsu. Hagoromo had his own sons, Asura and Indra, and the latter weaponized chakra and established the modern Shinobi world we know today.
The history of shinobi and its origin is important for the Naruto world since it was directly responsible for the establishment of the first Hidden Villages, specifically, Konohagakure. The Village Hidden by Leaves was established after the peace treaty was signed between Senju and Uchiha clans, and it kickstarted the founding of other Hidden Villages in other countries.
When it comes to the ‘Naruto’ series, the anime and manga series follow the titular character of Uzumaki Naruto and his hard and exciting journey of becoming the best shinobi the world has ever seen. His ultimate goal is to become a Hokage, a leader, and protector of Konohagakure, and throughout the series, Naruto visits many places around the Ninja World.
His journey through Five Great Shinobi Countries is the main setting of the series, and the characters and lore of the Ninja World only expand with each episode/chapter.
In conclusion of this section, the Naruto series is set in the Ninja World, a fictional planet Earth, specifically on the continent that includes countries and mystical places, and Five Great Shinobi Countries being at the forefront of the Naruto storyline.
If we had to compare the setting to real life, Kishimoto took inspiration from Fukuoka, which has places resembling notable buildings in Konoha, like Ichiraku Ramen and Tokugawa period of Japanese history, which marks the last traces of traditional Japan and transition to the modern period. Overall, Kishimoto combined traditional Japan and present modern-day (the 1990s and 2000s) Japan and set it in an alternate universe and planet Earth.
