Share:

One of the best aspects of the ‘Naruto‘ series is definitely the worldbuilding and the lore revolving around the Ninja World. The history behind creating the Five Great Shinobi Countries and the Earth is interesting and has an important role in the ‘Naruto’ series storyline. In the real world, most countries have main villages that are extremely powerful shinobi forces and are the only ones that Kage leads. In this article, I’ll list all Hidden Villages in the ‘Naruto’ franchise.

  • Article Breakdown:
  • There are currently 34 Hidden Villages in the Naruto Universe that have appeared in the anime and manga series over the years.
  • Some of them are destroyed, like Uzushiogakure, the village the Uzumaki clan originates from.
  • The five main Hidden Villages that serve as the leading political forces of the Five Great Shinobi Countries are Iwagakure, Konohagakure, Kumogakure, Kirigakure, and Sunagakure.

The short history behind the Hidden Villages and Shinobi World

The Naruto series established a rich Ninja World that only expanded as time passed. The fictional blue planet of Earth is the setting of the series, and the large continent includes various countries. The Ninja World society prevails in that continent, and a whole chain of historical events showcases the creation of Shinobi on Earth.

The story goes hundreds of years ago when Kaguya Ōtsutsuki and her clan arrived on Earth, ate the fruit of God Tree, and manifested chakra that stopped all the wars on the planet. She gave birth to her twin sons, Hagoromo and Hamura, the first humans born with chakra.

As it usually is in anime and similar fictional media, Kaguya got corrupted by the hunger for chakra and decided to kill her sons to take her chakra back. She used Infinite Tsukuyomi to turn her victims in the army and White Zetsu and proceeded to connect with the God Tree and turn herself into a Ten-Tails beast.

Her sons sealed her away to stop her from destroying everything and proceeded to spread the belief that chakra connects the whole world. Hagoromo established the religion ninshū that taught of the peaceful world and became the predecessor for modern ninjutsu that we know in the Naruto series. Of course, the peaceful integration of the teachings into everyday life stopped, and Hagoromo’s son Indra realized that he could use chakra in combat and created the ninjutsu and the first Shinobi on Earth.

These events led to the Warring States Period, which marked the violent era of establishing hidden villages. Specifically, the shinobi clans fought against each other to take over the lands and create their own places to live. Uchiha Clan and Senju Clan were among the most notable shinobi clans that fought each other. After decades of bloodshed, Senju Hashirama offered the peace treaty to Uchiha Clan, which Madara accepted.

This event marks the clan’s union with the Land of Fire and their motivation to form a hidden village. Besides Senju and Uchiha clans, others joined the village, and Konohagakure was officially formed. This event led to the creation of other hidden villages, and other countries only continued the trend of development. Of course, the Shinobi World only got bigger, and Five Great Shinobi Countries stood out from the rest. Let’s see how many Hidden Villages are in the Naruto series.

The number of Hidden Villages in Naruto is astonishing, but if you consider the number of episodes and manga chapters the series has, you will understand. All in all, these places had important parts in the story, some more and less.

What are the five main Hidden Villages in the ‘Naruto’ series?

Despite having so many villages and lands in the Ninja World, only five countries and their villages are considered the biggest and most influential. There is Konohagakure of Land of Fire, the oldest and probably the strongest country, and Hidden Village of the Ninja World, the main setting for the Naruto series.

The second member of Five Great Shinobi Countries is the Land of Lightning and its village Kumogakure, where the Raikage is the leader. One of the strongest shinobi of the series resides in this village and country.

The third member includes the country Land of Earth and its Hidden Village Iwagakure, and Tsuchikage is the leader. Throughout the series, Iwagakure was always the place that had shaky relations with other villages.

The fourth member of the Five Great Shinobi Countries is Land of Water and Kirigakure, one of the most controversial and bloody villages in the Naruto series. It introduced us to many great shinobi and the most dangerous ones, like Zabuza, Kisame, and others.

The final and fifth member is the Land of Wind and its village Sunagakure, which also has questionable in the Ninja World history. Still, with One-Tail jinchuriki, Gaara, and his siblings Temari and Kankuro, the village and the whole country became politically stable. Of course, Naruto had a huge role in that as well.

All these countries and villages are important, especially if we consider their path of being mostly against each other to allies in the Fourth Shinobi War toward the end of the series. Naruto had a huge role in establishing great relations between countries with his honesty, bravery, and charisma, which was the most important part of Naruto’s journey. With the Boruto series, we see more hidden villages and countries revealed, and we cannot wait for more.
