How Does The Ice Dragon Connect to Game of Thrones & House of the Dragon? Explained

George RR Martin has become a household name in the world of fiction because of the success of his book series, A Song of Ice & Fire, which was adapted into the beloved Game of Thrones series. His Fire & Blood book also found success in House of the Dragon. Of course, he also announced that one of his first works, The Ice Dragon, is going to be adapted into an animated movie. But how does The Ice Dragon connect with Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon?

The Ice Dragon has no connections with A Song of Ice & Fire, as George RR Martin himself said that it doesn’t take place in the same world. This could mean that the animated version of The Ice Dragon probably has no connections with Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon as well.

While it has been admitted that The Ice Dragon doesn’t take place in the same world as A Song of Ice & Fire, Martin could still change things up a bit by creating a connection between the animated version and the world of GOT and HOTD. Still, it is unlikely that this will happen. Now, with that said, let’s look at this discussion in greater detail to understand more about The Ice Dragon and its connection with Martin’s other works.

What Is The Ice Dragon All About?

We all know that George RR Martin found success when he was able to create a beautiful world in his book called A Song of Ice & Fire (ASOIAF), which was the very same material that was adapted into Game of Thrones, which is a hit TV series that is said to be one of the greatest shows of all time. Of course, he also wrote a book called Fire & Blood, which is a book that tells the history of House Targaryen. This book was adapted into the ongoing House of the Dragon series.

The good news is that the stories of Martin’s literary world are still ongoing, and he was able to create more works that allowed him to expand on the history and lore of ASOIAF. That was when he promoted his book called The Rise of the Dragon: An Illustrated History of the Targaryen Dynasty. And it was in that interview with Penguin Random House that he revealed that another one of his works was going to get an adaptation from Warner Bros.

In the interview above, he said:

“Some of you may know that I occasionally wrote other books that were not part of Westeros or that story. And one of them that I wrote way back in 1978 was a short story about a dragon, an ice dragon, and it’s called The Ice Dragon.”

Martin basically said that The Ice Dragon is going to get its own animated version from Warner Bros. Animation. As such, one of his beloved works is once again going to get an adaptation as Warner Bros. believes in his ability to create stories well enough that his works have become staples in the company’s roster of movies and shows. In the same interview, he said:

“Just a short story, as I said. It’s primarily a kid’s story, but we are going to make that into a movie. Warner Bros. Animation has purchased the rights to it, and we’re going to expand it to a fully animated film… a theatrical film, we hope, to be released in a motion picture palace near you.”

Of course, this story is one of George RR Martin’s first works, as he worked on it back in 1978 when he was still a lot younger. Meanwhile, the book was first published in 1980 as a short story for adults. However, the book was reworded to be more suitable for children as it was published as a children’s book in 2007. In that regard, we are probably going to get the kid’s story version of The Ice Dragon in the animated movie that Warner Bros. is planning to release.

The story of The Ice Dragon follows the story of Adara, who was born in a long winter with the worst temperatures in a very long time. Her mother, however, died giving birth to her. And because Adara was born during one of the coldest and longest winters of all time, she loves the cold and loves playing out in the snow.

But the thing about Adara is that she is as cold as ice in the sense that she is emotionless. She also feels that an ice dragon has always been a part of her life, as she claims to have touched and ridden one as early as the age of five. But the people of her town fear the ice dragon because they all believe that it is a dangerous and ferocious creature that can never be tamed. Still, Adara doesn’t fear the ice dragon because she was born in the winter and has always enjoyed the cold.

By the time she was seven, Adara had experienced war in her land for the first time as fire dragons came from the north to destroy her home. The riders of these dragons started attacking her family, and that was when the ice dragon fought the other dragons to protect her from the dangers that came. Luckily, the ice dragon was able to defeat the fire dragons and their riders but disappeared soon after. 

After the dragon disappeared, only a very cold pool of water was left. Adara’s skin eventually became warmer as she was now able to feel emotions for the first time in her life. She was no longer an emotionless young girl that couldn’t laugh or smile. In that regard, it was as if the ice dragon was connected to her life, as it was what made her feel cold and emotionless the entire time.

How Does The Ice Dragon Connect With Game Of Thrones And House Of The Dragon?

Those who’ve seen Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon would be familiar with dragons. However, all of the dragons we’ve seen so far (except for the undead Viserion) are actually fire dragons. Viserion, after getting reanimated into an undead dragon, breathed cold fire instead. But it was not an ice dragon.

Of course, the story of The Ice Dragon involves both an ice dragon and a group of fire dragons. So, if that is the case, is there a connection between The Ice Dragon and Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon?

Several people believe that Martin’s The Ice Dragon book takes place in the same world as ASOIAF. However, on his own website, Martin refuted any connections between the two worlds. On top of that, The Ice Dragon was written well before ASOIAF. And its world doesn’t match the known history of the world of ASOIAF.

As such, it is safe to conclude that the book version of The Ice Dragon takes place in an entirely different universe compared to the one wherein ASOIAF takes place. It might be true that there are supposedly ice dragons that exist in the known world of ASOIAF (although they are legendary and have never been seen), but it is unlikely that The Ice Dragon takes place in the same world as the book itself doesn’t match the events that have happened in the history of ASOIAF.

However, there is still a good chance that the animated version of The Ice Dragon will be altered in such a way that Martin will create a connection between it and Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. After all, the world that he created has become so big and popular that it would be exciting to see a connection between The Ice Dragon and his other works.

Nevertheless, at this point, it is too early to say that the animated version will carry connections with Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. If there were indeed connections that would be made, it would be very difficult to reconcile the two different worlds because the history of the events outlined in Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon is now too difficult to alter to include the story of The Ice Dragon.

But because we also know that much of the known world in ASOIAF is still unknown, there is still a good chance that the events of The Ice Dragon take place in one of the lands that the Westerosi people are unaware of and that the story takes place long before the events of Game of Thrones. Still, this all depends on how George RR Martin and Warner Bros. handle the story of The Ice Dragon.
