How Many People Play Genshin Impact?
Genshin Impact reportedly enjoys a current player base of approximately 65 million users. This number was estimated by Reddit user LuminesPlayThing and reached through extensive research.
The game had more than 21 million pre-registered users even before the release date. In the first week, an additional 17 million users downloaded and played the game.
Genshin Impact has managed to grow its numbers by releasing a continuous supply of newer content, such as new characters, weapons, giveaways, story quests, events, and locations. The player community remains engaged and growing as the game releases more versions for mobile, PS4, PS5, and PC.
The game has interesting storylines, exciting combat scenes, an enchanting world to explore, and very high production value.
Genshin Impact had approximately 9 million players in October 2021, 8.36 million players in September 2021, and 7.98 million players in August 2021. The game enjoyed an all-time high of 11 million users in June 2021. In January 2024, that number seems to be much higher, with a total of 64,319,046 active players in the last thirty days.
Month | AverageMonthly Players |
Last 30 Days | 64,319,046 |
December 2023 | 64,098,817 |
November 2023 | 63,009,908 |
October 2023 | 61,174,668 |
September 2023 | 64,462,242 |
August 2023 | 66,115,120 |

As you can see, that number is staggering as well, and from the data provided, we can conclude that, on average, Genshin Impact peaks with 19,081,317 players.

Genshin Impact Player Count by Country
Genshin Impact enjoys a wide and diverse audience of gamers. The game is not only widely successful in its home country of China but has won high praise, appreciation, and loyalty from all over the globe. When sorted by country and excluding China, the most downloads came from:
Country | % of players |
---|---|
United States | 11.09% |
Brazil | 6.67% |
Russia | 6.52% |
Philippines | 5.15% |
Vietnam | 4.55% |
Genshin Impact Player Count by Device
Genshin Impact is currently available on Android, iOS, PC, PS4, and PS5. The game’s accessibility is one of its main attractions and the reason for its popularity.
The game’s app was awarded as the Top Game App in 2020 for both Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store. It was also the winner in the Visuals and Graphics category of the 2021 Apple Design Awards. Another major win is Sensor Tower’s mobile app game revenue report declaring Genshin Impact as the September 2021 highest-grossing mobile game.
According to Active Player, there are approximately 3 million daily playing on Android and iOS mobile platforms. The number of PS4 gamers is estimated at over 300,000 per day.
The distribution is about 50-50 between iOS and Android. There are more people playing on Android outside China because there’s no Google Play Store in China. For the same reason, there are more iOS players in China than in the rest of the world. Chinese players download the Genshin Impact app from either the Apple App Store or Chinese app stores such as Huawei Store.
As of June 2021, Statista reports a Genshin Impact monthly active user (MAU) estimate of 2.67 million iOS players and 1.97 million Android players.
It’s much harder to estimate the number of PC players. This is because Genshin Impact for PC runs out of miHoYo’s own servers. Thus, it’s difficult for third parties to access and determine the number of live or active players.
How Many People Have Left Genshin Impact?
Genshin Impact is not losing players; on the contrary, it’s sometimes gaining them. In the early months after release, most gamers found the action too repetitive. An average gamer can easily rise up to level 55 in just a couple of weeks, and most gamers can kill most of the monsters quite easily. Thus, out of boredom, most gamers would leave within less than a month of playing.
In addition to repetitive tasks and storylines, many gamers expressed dissatisfaction with the Gacha system or monetization model for earning revenue and the lack of diversity in playable characters. Even though miHoYo gaming studios have worked to introduce more unique characters, events, maps, and weapons, the game has experienced an exodus over time.
There have also been concerns about privacy, information sharing, spying, and the game’s hard tactics against leakers. Nonetheless, the popularity of the game keeps growing. On the game’s first anniversary, miHoYo game studio had to start a second Genshin Discord server since the first one had filled up.
Most of the fans who seem to leave also seem to return with each new event or character release. With the switch version of the game set to be released soon, it is expected that the game will see a lot of returnees and an influx of new players.
Looking at the total number of players, the game has seen growth in numbers month after month. Thus, it’s not easy to determine how many people actually leave and how many new players come in to replace those who leave. The only loss in player numbers occurred in October 2023 and September 2023. Nonetheless, here are the concrete numbers showing the player base growth in the last six months.
Month | Players gained / Lost |
---|---|
Last 30 Days | +220,229 |
December 2023 | +1,088,909 |
November 2023 | +1,835,240 |
October 2023 | -3,287,574 |
September 2023 | -1,652,878 |
August 2023 | +719,353 |
July 2023 | +1,470,286 |
How Much Money Has Genshin Impact Made?
Genshin Impact had one of the most successful game launches in history. According to Sensor Tower estimates, the mobile game made over $245 million in player spending in the first month. In the US, the app raked in an estimated $45 million in the first month. That’s only counting mobile gaming.
If you count player spending on PC and PlayStation, the amount could be so much higher. The only other mobile game that has ever made as much money in its first month is Pokémon Go, which earned $283 million. So basically, Genshin Impact has possibly made more money than any other free game ever in its first month and first year.
Genshin Impact makes most of its revenue from mobile gaming. A large proportion of that income is from China, closely followed by Japan and the USA, respectively.
Apart from that, Genshin Impact became the largest revenue generator for both the App Store and Google Play globally. The app rose above favorites such as Tencent, Honor of Kings, Pokémon Go, PUBG Mobile, and Monster Strike.
In its first year, Genshin Impact earned somewhere between $2.3 billion and $3.7 billion. This figure surpasses Fortnite’s first-year earnings by more than a billion dollars.
Though the game is free-to-play, players can level up to stronger characters and more powerful weapons by spending on microtransactions in the Gacha system. Unlike many other free-to-play games, Genshin Impact isn’t overbearing with prompts to spend. Players can choose to play without ever spending a dime.
Nonetheless, Genshin Impact woos players to spend by offering amazing characters, weaponry, and experiences. Players spend cash in small microtransactions to purchase Genesis Crystals. Players then convert the Genesis Crystals to the game’s main currency, Primogems. Players can then spend the Primogems to win new characters in the Gacha system lottery.
In the first month, these are the Genshin Impact characters who made the game the most money.
Character | First Month Revenue |
Zhongli | $15.5 million |
Xiao | $15.1 million |
Ganyu | $14.8 million |
Klee | $14.5 million |
Hu Tao | $12.9 million |
Childe | $9.8 million |
Albedo | $9.1 million |
Player spending is fueled by creative marketing, word of mouth, and influencer actions. The Genshin Impact player community is familiar with gaming influencers such as Cho BeryL Geon-hee, who spent over $6,800 on buying Primogems. Others include YouTuber Michael Mtashed Tash, content creator Tectone, and cosplayer Glori.
