Is ‘Skull Island’ Canon to the MonsterVerse?

The MonsterVerse is one of the many different cinematic universes we have in today’s modern film world. However, instead of superheroes and giant robots, the MonsterVerse features some of the most popular monsters seen in Western and Eastern cinema, including King Kong and Godzilla. That said, Netflix’s ‘Skull Island’ is the newest series about giant monsters and their existence in this fictional universe. But is ‘Skull Island’ actually canon to the MonsterVerse?
‘Skull Island’ is canon to the MonsterVerse because of the fact that it features one of the MonsterVerse’s most popular monsters, Kong. The series is set on Skull Island, the fictional home of MonsterVerse’s Kong and many other giant creatures from Hollow Earth.
At this point, the entire storyline of ‘Skull Island’ is said to be connected to the storyline of MonsterVerse because of how the series talks about the existence of an island full of giant monsters ruled by a gigantic ape. Of course, the series was a bit ambiguous regarding its timeline, but that’s something that we’ll try to look at as well. Now, let’s talk more about whether or not ‘Skull Island’ is canon to the MonsterVerse.
Is ‘Skull Island’ a part of the MonsterVerse?
Today’s modern world of the film now incorporates more continuity in the events of different fictional projects. That’s because more and more cinematic universes are popping up as companies have seen the importance and allure of continuity in different films due to the success of the MCU as the greatest cinematic universe we’ve seen in the modern age. But while most cinematic universes talk about superheroes, the MonsterVerse departs from all that because of its focus on monsters.
The MonsterVerse includes some of the greatest monsters that the world of cinema has seen before. With its partnership with Toho, the MonsterVerse included Godzilla and a lot of different Kaiju from Japanese media into the MonsterVerse, which also includes the greatest giant monster that Western film has ever produced—King Kong.
We saw the early stages of the MonsterVerse when Legendary Pictures released the 2014 ‘Godzilla’ film. This movie reintroduced Godzilla to the Western world as a giant lizard beast that seemingly functioned to keep all other monsters in check. Then three years later, we saw ‘Kong: Skull Island,’ which tackled the early beginnings of the giant ape known as Kong, who lives on an island called Skull Island.
Speaking of Skull Island, Netflix released an animated series based on the same island. Entitled ‘Skull Island,’ the series focuses on a group of people who were shipwrecked and washed ashore on the titular island. But is the ‘Skull Island’ series actually canon to the entire MonsterVerse?
When ‘Skull Island’ was announced as a joint project between Netflix and Legendary Pictures, it was also announced that this was the fifth installment in the entire MonsterVerse storyline. The movies before it were ‘Godzilla,’ ‘Kong: Skull Island,’ ‘Godzilla: King of Monsters,’ and ‘Godzilla vs. Kong.’ The fact that ‘Skull Island’ was named the fifth installment of the MonsterVerse indicates that Legendary Pictures always meant for this series to be canon to the entire fictional universe.
So, for the sake of continuity, fans of the MonsterVerse might want to watch ‘Skull Island’ as it is part of this fictional universe full of giant monsters, Titans, and Kaiju. And it is a promising series that impressed critics and fans alike with its first season.
‘Skull Island’s connection to the MonsterVerse
As mentioned, ‘Skull Island’ is canon to the entire MonsterVerse and all other movies released in this fictional universe. However, how does ‘Skull Island’ connect to the MonsterVerse?
Well, the most obvious answer lies in the title of the series. The fictional location of Skull Island has always been one of the most important places in the entire MonsterVerse. In ‘Kong: Skull Island,’ the island was the main setting of the film and was able to introduce Kong as a monster that ruled the island as its alpha. Of course, the island is also populated with different giant monsters that are beyond imagination, and Kong serves as the one that keeps all those other monsters in check.
Skull Island was repeatedly mentioned in the other MonsterVerse projects and was finally featured once more in ‘Godzilla vs. Kong,’ which the government organization known as Monarch was already able to keep within a barrier to keep an eye on Kong and all of the other monsters that were on the island.
As such, the connection between the ‘Skull Island’ series and the MonsterVerse is the titular island itself. Of course, the events of ‘Skull Island’ heavily feature our favorite giant ape, who was yet to become public knowledge to the rest of the world during the timeline of the ‘Skull Island’ series. The ‘Skull Island’ series also allowed us to see the dynamic between Kong and many other giant creatures living on the island, as it was clear that the giant ape was the uncontested alpha that kept all the other monsters in check.
The fact that ‘Skull Island’ features Kong, one of the Titans that has become the face of the entire MonsterVerse, allows it to see how it connects to the larger MonsterVerse and the events going on in the world. And it appears that the storyline of ‘Skull Island’ is the earliest out of all the five MonsterVerse projects released because Kong is still smaller and that Skull Island is yet to be taken over by Monarch.
