Is the Next James Bond Already Found? Here’s What We Actually Know Right Now
Few casting mysteries in Hollywood have dragged on quite like the search for the next James Bond. It’s been nearly five years since Daniel Craig closed out his run as 007 in ‘No Time to Die,’ and in that time almost every British actor under 40 has, at some point, been floated online as a potential successor.
That speculation reached a fever pitch this summer as Amazon MGM Studios, which now holds full creative control of the franchise after buying out longtime stewards Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, pushed the search into what insiders describe as its final stretch. With director Denis Villeneuve and writer Steven Knight already locked in, all eyes have shifted to who will actually wear the tuxedo.
Online chatter has recently suggested the next Bond has already been quietly cast, with some posts claiming an official announcement could arrive at any moment. The reality, based on what producers and insiders have actually said, is a little more measured than that, even if the timeline genuinely is closing in.
Producer Amy Pascal, who now oversees the franchise alongside David Heyman, addressed the timeline directly in an interview with Deadline. Asked whether fans might get news by the end of the year, she said the end of the year is a good bet, while stressing that the team is being extremely methodical given how hard an act Daniel Craig is to follow.
Pascal also hinted at the tone the studio is chasing for its new leading man, saying the next Bond has to feel genuinely different, stirring, and exciting rather than a simple retread. That comment alone has fueled plenty of debate over whether Amazon MGM is looking at a younger, lesser-known actor rather than an established star.
Behind the scenes, the process has been moving. Villeneuve and the producing team reportedly notified a shortlist of actors who advanced to a final round of auditions, with those screen tests expected to take place throughout August, and casting director Nina Gold has been personally meeting with candidates to finalize the list.
No actor has been officially confirmed, but that hasn’t stopped names from circulating. Callum Turner, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Harris Dickinson, and Jacob Elordi have all been mentioned as contenders at various points over the past year.
The most recent addition to that list came from broadcaster Richard Osman, who said on his The Rest Is Entertainment podcast that he’d been told the name Jack Lowden, best known for ‘Slow Horses,’ was being seriously considered. Osman was careful to note that being considered is far from being cast, adding that the tip could easily turn out wrong, just as past Bond rumors often have.
Separately, some social media accounts have claimed the studio is targeting an October reveal, though that specific date has not been confirmed by Amazon MGM or any of the producers themselves. With Bond 26 reportedly eyeing a 2028 release and production expected to begin in 2027, an announcement before the year is out would still leave plenty of runway.
So while the rumor mill insists the wait is nearly over, the honest answer right now is that nobody outside the production has confirmed a name, and Pascal’s own comments suggest fans should expect a reveal by year’s end rather than an announcement dropping without warning today.
