James Gunn Addresses Rumors of a Mr. Freeze Spin-Off at DC Studios
While James Gunn is hard at work rebooting the DC cinematic universe, Matt Reeves is equally busy expanding his “Epic Crime Saga,” which began with 2022’s The Batman.
The Batman was designed to kick off a new trilogy and create a standalone, Batman-centric shared universe, dubbed the “Batman Epic Crime Saga.” By 2019, key cast members had already committed to future films.
Both Robert Pattinson and director Matt Reeves expressed interest in bringing characters like Robin and villains such as the Court of Owls, Mr. Freeze, and Hush into the sequels.
A sequel, The Batman – Part II, was confirmed in 2022 with Robert Pattinson and Matt Reeves returning, and it’s slated for an October 2026 release following a delay.
Meanwhile, the first spin-off series, The Penguin, focusing on Oz Cobb, is currently airing its first season to widespread acclaim from critics and fans. Recently, Reeves teased that another spin-off is in development, sparking rumors of a Mr. Freeze project, potentially a movie.
These rumors originated from Production Weekly, but given their mixed track record, there’s no solid evidence supporting the claim. While Reeves hinted that The Batman Part II might feature a winter setting, he also suggested steering away from more fantastical villains, making the Court of Owls a more likely candidate.
James Gunn, known for addressing rumors on social media, quickly responded to a fan inquiry about the Mr. Freeze movie, seemingly debunking the speculation.
I haven’t heard that one but there are a lot of rumors out there this week. Some of them are true, some are partially true, and some aren’t true at all. If it’s fun for you to follow the unknowns, follow them, but don’t trust anything completely until you hear it from me or Peter (who is not online despite me seeing him tagged in stuff.)

Although James Gunn initially didn’t directly mention the rumored Mr. Freeze project, some fans speculated that he was sidestepping the question. However, Gunn later addressed the topic directly, fully debunking the rumor.

You’ve heard it straight from James Gunn himself: while Mr. Freeze remains one of Batman’s most iconic villains, a project centered around him isn’t in development—at least not yet. But that doesn’t mean it couldn’t happen in the future.
