James Gunn Claims His DCU Will Be Similar to “Game of Thrones” and “Star Wars” – Fans React: “We Had This With Snyder”
James Gunn has a notable track record in the superhero genre, having contributed to the MCU with the successful “Guardians of the Galaxy” franchise and also participating in Snyder’s ill-fated DCEU.
When he and Safran took over DC Studios, they announced a complete reboot along with a comprehensive slate of new projects. Over a year since that announcement, we now have a clearer view of how Gunn intends to build a cinematic universe that aims to outshine both the MCU and the DCEU.
When the initial slate was revealed, we gained some insight into the universe James Gunn is shaping. The co-CEO of DC Studios stated that his vision would resemble “Star Wars” and “Game of Thrones,” featuring morally complex characters and a rich, expansive world. Gunn also outlined the distinctions between the MCU, DCU, and the previous DCEU.
think that we have a lot of differences. I think that one of the reasons why I love DC is it really is another universe. It’s an alternate world. In Marvel generally, it’s New York, Chicago, San Francisco, and then every place else in the world is a fictional universe for some reason. Here at DCU we have Metropolis and Gotham and Themyscira and Atlantis, and all of that is sort of another fictional universe. And this is the world that we’re creating.
We’re coming into a world where superheroes exist and have existed for some time in one form or another, and that’s the universe. And so we are telling a big, huge central story. Except for, I think, we’re a lot more planned out than Marvel from the beginning, because we’ve gotten a group of writers together to work that story out completely. But we’re also creating a universe that is like Star Wars where there are different times, different places, different things, [and] like Game of Thrones, where characters are a little bit more morally complex.

In that statement, the aspect that resonated most with fans was the emphasis on “morally complex” characters, a criticism often leveled at Zack Snyder. Snyder’s portrayal of iconic characters took a darker, more brutal approach, with Batman and Superman breaking their no-killing rule. He argued that characters are uninteresting and unrealistic if they cannot kill, aiming to humanize them and place them in morally challenging situations with decisions that felt more authentic.
Gunn’s comments sparked considerable excitement among fans:
