James Gunn and Peter Safran are working to create a new DC cinematic universe after the DCEU. One of the successful projects to continue into this new era is James Gunn’s Peacemaker, which will return for a second season as part of the DCU.
Gunn confirmed that Peacemaker Season 2 will be canon in the DCU and reassured fans that the transition from the DCEU to the DCU will be clear and easy to follow without confusion.
James Gunn assured fans that Peacemaker Season 2 will fit perfectly into the new DCU storyline. However, he clarified that Peacemaker Season 1 will not be considered canon within the DCU.
Some exceptions were made for Peacemaker Season 1 due to its ties to The Suicide Squad, particularly the storyline involving Rick Flag Jr.’s death. Gunn had previously stated that only certain parts of the old DCEU would be considered canon.
However, things became more complicated as he clarified which elements of Peacemaker Season 1 are not canon, explaining that nothing is officially part of the new DCU unless it appears in Creature Commandos or later works in the DCU.
Gunn talked to IGN and clarified that most of the content before Creature Commandos won’t be considered canon in the new DCU, with a few exceptions. He emphasized that only elements shown in Creature Commandos or future DCU projects will be officially part of the new continuity.
Now in Creature Commandos, you’ll hear them talk about things that happened in [The] Suicide Squad or Peacemaker, well then, those things automatically become canon.
In The Suicide Squad, Weasel survived and later returned in Creature Commandos, where he joins a new team led by Amanda Waller. Gunn also addressed confusion surrounding a scene from Peacemaker featuring the old Justice League, including Aquaman and Flash. He clarified that these versions of the characters are from the previous DC continuity, not part of the new DCU.
The truth is almost all of Peacemaker is canon with the exception of Justice League… which we will kind of deal with in the next season of Peacemaker,”
The problem is, if the DCU makes Rick Flag Jr.’s death canon, it would also make Henry Cavill’s Superman part of the new continuity, which doesn’t make sense. It’s an interesting issue and shows Gunn is still figuring things out, even revisiting statements from nearly a year ago. What do you think? Let us know in the comments below!
