James Gunn is creating a brand-new cinematic universe called the DCU, which will replace Snyder’s DCEU—a franchise that had its share of big hits and big misses.

The DCU officially begins with Creature Commandos coming out this December. However, Gunn and Safran have said that the real start of the DCU will be the new Superman movie, set to release in 2025.

The exact plot for the movies introducing Superman and Batman to the new DCU is still a secret. However, we know they’re not origin stories—they’re based on comics about superheroes who are already established.

While James Gunn has confirmed this approach before, some fans still find it odd that the DCU isn’t starting with classic origin stories for Batman or Superman. Gunn recently spoke about this on Threads:

I’m not telling Batman and Superman’s origin stories again because everyone knows them. And don’t put Swamp Thing in the corner. That’s a project in development we’ve actually announced, and he’s an incredibly well known character with not only some of the greatest comics of all time but a successful film series and his own TV show, something that could be said of only a very small handful of DC characters.

James Gunn said he’s skipping the origin stories for Batman and Superman because everyone already knows them.

He also talked about focusing on characters like Swamp Thing, explaining that Swamp Thing has amazing comics, popular movies, and a TV show, making him an important part of the DC universe.

Skipping Superman’s origin story makes sense since it’s already been told in movies like the 1978 Superman and 2013’s Man of Steel. Superman is one of the most famous superheroes ever, so there’s no need to repeat the same story. Other heroes like Batman and Spider-Man have also skipped their origin stories in recent movies like The Batman and the MCU’s Spider-Man trilogy.
