James Gunn Responds to Zack Snyder Fans’ Plan to Sabotage Superman Movie: “These people help us”

A group of Zack Snyder fans is attempting to disrupt the release of James Gunn’s Superman film, set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.

A Reddit post from a Snyder supporter urged others to spoil the movie online, post negative reviews, and block ticket sales by reserving seats without purchasing them. The post labeled Gunn’s project the “imposter Superman” and claimed, “Gunn fired the first shot and killed the SnyderVerse and here is our chance to take the fight back to him.”

Gunn addressed the campaign directly on Threads, dismissing its impact. “I think we will survive. I’m not sure the eight people that listen to that guy (I’m going to go out on a limb and guess it’s a guy) are going to impact the course of events,” he wrote.

In a separate Rolling Stone interview, Gunn took a broader view, suggesting that online criticism can be beneficial. “I think it’s good. I think you don’t wanna have everybody root for you,” he said.

The tension stems from Gunn’s role as co-head of DC Studios, where he’s steering a new DC Universe, moving away from Snyder’s vision, known as the SnyderVerse.

While some fans remain loyal to Snyder’s darker take on characters like Superman and Batman, Gunn is focused on launching his Superman film as the foundation for DC’s rebooted cinematic slate.

He mentioned that one of the actors in Superman gets really upset reading online comments, but Gunn reminded them that most people have reacted positively. “The trailer came out and [reaction] was 97, 98% positive,” he said. “These people help us, because you don’t want everything to seem 100% positive.”

Gunn also pointed out how some people always find something to complain about. He joked about the controversy that the sun causes Superman pain, saying, “It was great controversy that the sun caused Superman pain.”

It’s disappointing to see fans try to sabotage a movie before it’s even out, especially when Gunn’s Superman could offer a fresh take on a beloved hero. His response shows confidence and a willingness to brush off the noise, which is the right move.

Fandoms should lift up what they love, not tear down what they don’t. I’m curious to see how Gunn’s vision plays out. What do you think about this fan campaign and Gunn’s reaction? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
