Jennifer Lawrence Finally Picks a Side in the Hunger Games Love Triangle
Few love triangles have sparked as much fan warfare as the one at the heart of ‘The Hunger Games’. For years, audiences debated whether Katniss Everdeen belonged with her dependable fellow tribute Peeta Mellark or her longtime friend and hunting partner Gale Hawthorne, played by Liam Hemsworth.
Of course, Katniss ultimately chose Peeta, the gentle and comfortable best friend, while Gale had long been her will-they-won’t-they connection. Now, years after the final film, the woman who played her has offered a surprising take on which side she’s really on.
During her latest appearance on Alex Cooper’s ‘Call Her Daddy‘ podcast, Jennifer Lawrence declared that she was Team Gale all along. In a clip shared by Pop Base, she joked that she stayed loyal to him even after he was connected to her sister’s death.
It’s a darkly funny admission given how Katniss’ story plays out. In ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2′, Katniss’ younger sister Prim, the very girl she volunteered to save in the first film, is killed in a bombing while rushing in as a medic.
Jennifer Lawrence reveals she received some of the nastiest backlash of her life for saying she was Team Jeremiah in The Summer I Turned Pretty. Alex Cooper: “Were you Team Peeta or were you Team Gale?” Jennifer Lawrence: “I was Team Gale. Even after he killed my sister.” Alex Cooper: “Still rooting for him?” Jennifer Lawrence: “Yeah.” Alex Cooper: “Do you think that will cause controversy on the internet?” Jennifer Lawrence: “I can’t say, because I said that I was Team Jeremiah during The Summer I Turned Pretty, and the level of hate that I got was bigger than any controversy I’ve ever been involved in in my life.” Alex Cooper: “Talk to me about that.” Jennifer Lawrence: “I feel like I was just rage-baiting slightly, because I did it with my friends. It was just like, ‘I like Jeremiah,’ and they’d be like, ‘Ah!’ I thought it was innocent.” “People were like, ‘You should die. You should die.’” Alex Cooper: “It is wild to insert yourself in that, especially who you are.” Jennifer Lawrence: “Oh, so you agree with them?” Alex Cooper: “No! I’m just shocked that you just sling it out there like, ‘Oh, I’m just going to tell you what I think.’” Jennifer Lawrence: “How on earth would I have assumed that such a thing would cause such a reaction? I’ve pissed off the public many, many times. I’ve been famous for decades. It never occurred to me that that would be the number one where people were just like, ‘I wish you had never been born.’”

Lawrence also reflected on the last time she picked a side in a fictional romance. She recalled that saying she was Team Jeremiah in ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’ brought her more hate than any controversy she has ever been involved in.
That moment came during a September 2025 interview with Mubi, where she was promoting ‘Die, My Love’ alongside Robert Pattinson. Lawrence admitted her friends had begged her not to reveal her opinion, but she went ahead anyway, calling Conrad toxic for leaving Belly hanging and confessing his love the night before her wedding.

She even anticipated the backlash, inviting fans to rake her over the coals. The clip racked up more than 8 million views, and many fans of Conrad and Belly, who ended up together in the series finale, were quick to fire back.
The internet didn’t miss the irony of Lawrence backing Jeremiah. One TikTok user pointed out that Katniss essentially chose her own Jeremiah in Peeta, making Lawrence’s preference for the steadier brother feel like a full-circle moment.

Now, by revealing she’s Team Gale, Lawrence seems to be leaning the other way in her own franchise. It’s the kind of contradiction that only adds to her reputation for pop culture hot takes, from ‘Real Housewives’ opinions to fictional love triangles.
The timing of her comments is no accident. During the same ‘Call Her Daddy’ appearance, Lawrence officially confirmed that she’s returning as Katniss in ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’, which arrives in theaters next month.

She described the experience as unbelievable and deeply emotional, noting that it was the same crew she had worked with before. Lawrence said she and Josh Hutcherson, who returns as Peeta, were practically inseparable on set, and joked that Woody Harrelson, who also returns, climbed through her hotel room window uninvited.
Whether fans agree with her or not, Lawrence clearly isn’t afraid to stir the pot. Her Team Jeremiah comments taught her just how passionate fandoms can be, yet she’s still willing to weigh in on another iconic love triangle. With ‘Sunrise on the Reaping’ bringing Katniss and Peeta back to the big screen, the Peeta versus Gale debate may be about to heat up all over again.
