Joe Russo Calls ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Theatrical Re-Release “Critically Important” Ahead of New MCU Chapter
Joe Russo has confirmed that the upcoming return of Avengers: Endgame to cinemas will not be a simple re-release. According to reporting from Deadline, the filmmaker explained that new material will be added and that it directly connects to the next major Marvel film, Avengers: Doomsday. The update came during a talk at the Sands Film Festival after Disney recently confirmed the re-release plans.
Russo said the new content is tied to the upcoming story of Doomsday rather than being bonus material like deleted scenes or behind-the-scenes clips. He described it as important to the overall direction of the Marvel Cinematic Universe going forward. The added footage is meant to connect the ending of Endgame with what comes next in the franchise.
He explained that bringing the 2019 film back to theaters is part of building that connection. In his words, “It’s critically important to re-release the movie, and, in fact, we’ll be re-releasing the film with footage that is set in the Doomsday story that we have added to Avengers: Endgame.”
Endgame originally closed out the storyline involving Thanos and the Infinity Stones and became one of the biggest films ever made. Since its release, the Marvel universe has continued to grow with multiple new movies and TV series, expanding the timeline and introducing new characters and story arcs.
Russo also suggested that the new version of Endgame works as a direct setup for Doomsday, which is expected in December 2026. He described it as a linking piece between the two films, meant to guide viewers from one story into the next. He said it serves as a “critical companion story” that leads into the next chapter of the MCU.
He added that the new approach gives Marvel a rare opportunity to reintroduce a major film and adjust its place in the larger storyline. According to him, “It’s an opportunity to create a bridge from Endgame to Doomsday in a very unique way…”
The re-release is also notable because Endgame remains one of the highest-grossing films in history, earning close to $2.8 billion worldwide. The film will return to theaters in September, with Doomsday scheduled for release later in December 2026.
At this stage, Marvel has not fully explained how the new footage will fit into the film or what specific story elements will be included. But the intention is clear: Endgame will now play a direct role in setting up what comes next in the MCU.
This is a bold move from Marvel. Re-releasing a major film with story-critical additions is not something studios usually do. It could make the transition to Doomsday feel more connected, but it also risks confusing viewers who expect Endgame to stay as it originally was. Still, it shows Marvel is trying new ways to keep its long-running universe tightly linked.
