Jujutsu Kaisen: Does Maki Zenin Die? Here Is What Happens to Her!
Although the focus of Jujutsu Kaisen is undoubtedly on Yuji’s generation – which also consists of Megumi and Nobara – the upperclassmen of Tokyo High are also extremely interesting. Panda, Toge Inumaki, and Maki Zenin are amazing characters who played a major role in Jujutsu Kaisen 0 and are secondary characters in Jujutsu Kaisen. However, they are still important enough for us to discuss them. In this article, we are going to talk about Maki Zenin, the only female in this group, as you are going to find out what exactly happened to her in the series.
Maki’s story is quite interesting, and despite close calls, she is still alive
Maki Zenin is a member of the famous Zenin Clan, but she has been rejected by her family (similarly to Toji) because she was a non-sorcerer with Heavenly Restriction; she gained exceptional physical skills, but due to her low level of cursed energy, her family did not care much about her. She was a first-year student in Jujutsu Kaisen 0 and helped Yuta accommodate his new environment.
In the present timeline, that of Jujutsu Kaisen, Maki Zenin is a second-year student and is immediately introduced as a member of one of the great clans despite her hatred for her family. Because she has a Heavenly Restriction (just like her cousin, Toji, had), she cannot use cursed energy or see curses (this is why she is always wearing glasses with special lenses that allow her to actually see curses), but she possesses superhuman physical qualities that would normally make her a second-grade sorcerer.
This condition of hers, combined with the oppressive behavior of her family, has made her very stubborn, wanting to try at all costs to be worth something despite her heavy disadvantages. Maki specializes in using weapons filled with evil energy, being the best of her second year. She possesses many weapons and is able to use naginata, katana, a short blade, and kunai.
Her role in the initial arcs wasn’t that big, but she did put up a great fight during the Goodwill Event when we met her sister, Mai, whom Maki openly dislikes, although they will eventually work together. During the events in Shibuya, after Toji killed Dagon, Jogo burns her entire body, and she manages to survive only thanks to her resistance.
After the events of Shibuya, Maki returns to her clan to gain access to their arsenal containing weapons useful in the fight against Kenjaku but is brutally attacked and nearly killed by her father, Ogi Zeniin, who throws her and Mai, into a cell where they should have been devoured by hundreds of curses locked inside it.
During this experience, Maki becomes even more powerful, but only thanks to Mai’s sacrifice. The two, being twins, shared cursed energy from birth. When Mai died, Maki’s Heavenly Restriction completely deprived her of any trace of cursed energy, making her superhuman body extremely more powerful, on the level of Toji, who was their cousin.
Maki, furious at her twin’s death, fulfills her final wish to “destroy everything” and, with her new abilities, manages to massacre the entire Zenin clan as if it were nothing. After entrusting her sister’s body to Momo, Maki hunts down the clan members absent that day, killing them all.
In the Culling Game, Maki fights alongside Noritoshi, easily destroying all the curses she encounters, until she finds Naoya before her, returning with a vengeful curse intent on killing her. During this battle, she reaches her full potential, becoming just like Toji and managing to destroy Naoya. Currently, she is in Shinjuku, where she is observing the showdown against Sukuna.
And with this, Maki’s story is over for now. Of course, the series is still ongoing, and we’ll have to see what happens to her, but as of now, she is alive.
