We have already written many times about Jujutsu Kaisen‘s Yuta Okkotsu here on Fiction Horizon, and it makes sense that the protagonist of Jujutsu Kaisen 0 and the original protagonist of the whole series (as envisioned by Akutami before Yuji was created) is so popular. This article will also be about Yuta, as we will talk about what happened to him before his return in the Itadori’s Extermination Arc of the manga. We know that Yuta was in Africa during the Shibuya Incident Arc, which is why he wasn’t there to help the heroes. Why was he there? Keep reading to find out!

  • Article Breakdown:
  • After the events of Jujutsu Kaisen 0, Yuta Okkotsu was assigned to Miguel, who took him abroad to hone his abilities. During this period, Yuta studied and trained to become a better sorcerer.
  • It was revealed that Yuta was with Miguel in Africa during the events in Shibuya, which was an important fact that explains his absence from the arc.
  • Yuta Okkutsu was unable to help the protagonists because he was still studying in Africa at the time; he would go back to Japan not long after the events in Shibuya and help Itadori.

Yuta Okkotsu was in Africa because he was still studying with Miguel at the time

Regarding Yuta Okkotsu and his narrative, he serves as the main character in Jujutsu Kaisen 0; yet, what piques our interest at this point is what transpired with Yuta. Yuta was formerly accompanied, as believed, by the cursed spirit of Rika Orimoto. Yuta seemed to be plagued by this special-level curse, which followed him around after the actual Rika perished in an automobile accident.

Gojo took on Yuta’s case and enrolled him in the Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical College, where he made friends with Toge, Maki, and Panda. Suguru Geto immediately set his sights on him because of his extraordinary abilities and Rika’s strength. He intended to take Rika away from him and use her to fulfill his greatest ambition.

As those who’ve read and seen Jujutsu Kaisen 0 know, Yuta ultimately faced Geto and was able to defeat him, which ultimately led to Gojo killing his former best friend. And that is a well-known story, but that is not what interests us here. What interests us here is what happened to Yuta after Jujutsu Kaisen 0 and where he was during the Shibuya Incident Arc.

We know that Satoru Gojo repeatedly said that Yuta had great potential and that, together with Yuji Itadori and Kinji Hakari, he was one of just three characters who could truly outperform him in terms of skills and abilities. Because of his deep concern for Yuta and his awareness of his potential, Satoru Gojo sent him overseas to train under Miguel and polish his talents in order to become a more formidable man. Since Akutami didn’t provide any information, we don’t really know much, if anything, about this time period, which served as a kind of time travel for Yuta.

When Megumi brought up his name in conversation with Nobara during the Fearsome Womb Arc, it was noted that he was abroad. At the outset of the Shibuya Incident Arc, he was referenced once more. In particular, Satoru Gojo informed Pseudo-Geto (Kenjaku) that they still had Yuta on their side when he was actually captured by the box that would send him to the Prison Realm. However, Pseudo-Geto dismissed this, claiming that Geto, whose body he had possessed, had already engaged in combat with Yuta and that Yuta was weaker in the absence of the real Riko, who had since broken her bond with Yuta.

And while he was mentioned in Shibuya, he wasn’t actually there. Even while it’s clear that Gojo planned for Yuta to return to Japan in case something went wrong, nobody could have predicted what would happen at Shibuya. Everything that transpired was unexpected, and calling Yuta back didn’t make sense at first, nor was it necessary. Yuta was only called in as part of the clear backup plan that Gojo had made when he was sealed and then labeled a traitor. Yuta would return to Japan soon and help Itadori, and he then became a standard cast member in the manga.

As per the information we have, Yuta was in Africa during the Shibuya Incident, and he was still training with Miguel, which explains his absence. But as soon as he heard what happened, he returned to Japan to help his friends, especially Itadori.
