Even non-fans of Jujutsu Kaisen have probably heard of Satoru Gojo, as the guy is not only the most popular character from the series as a whole, but he is also one of the most popular anime characters in general. Gojo’s fanbase is such that he has transcended the series itself and has become more popular than the protagonist, Yuji Itadori himself. Now, Gojo is a character we have talked about a lot, but that does not mean we’ve exhausted all the topics we could. In this article, we are going to talk about the higher-ups’ decision to exile Gojo from the jujutsu society and label him as an accomplice in the Shibuya Incident. Why did they do it? Keep reading to find out.

  • Article Breakdown:
  • During the events in Shibuya, Satoru Gojo was sealed inside the Prison Realm. After it was all over, the higher-ups declared him an accomplice and exiled him, labeling any attempt to help him as a crime.
  • Gojo was, of course, not an accomplice of Kenjaku’s in Shibuya, but the higher-ups needed a reason to sanction him, so they lied about him being an accomplice so that they could exile him.
  • The reason why the higher-ups wanted to exile Gojo was that he was a dangerous individual who often obeyed them, and while they did fear and respect him, they wanted him out of the way.

Of course, Gojo was not an accomplice in the Shibuya Incident

The Shibuya Incident was a major event in the series that shaped the future of the world in many ways. Kenjaku commenced his plan to create a new world for cursed spirits, Satoru Gojo was sealed in the Prison Realm, and Sukuna demonstrated to the world just how powerful he actually was. All of this culminated in the prequel to the Culling Game, but that is just a short summary. A lot happened in Shibuya and the consequences of these events are still felt by everyone. One major moment was a notification from the higher-ups, which contained the following points:

  1. Suguru Geto’s survival was confirmed. We hereby declare the reinstatement of his death sentence.
  2. Satoru Gojo has been deemed an accomplice in the Shibuya Incident and is hereby expelled from jujutsu society. In addition, any attempt to free him from his seal will be deemed a crime.
  3. Masamichi Yaga is sentenced to death for inciting Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto, causing the Shibuya Incident.
  4. The suspension of Yuji Itadori’s death sentence is hereby revoked, and his execution shall be carried out promptly.
  5. Special-grade sorcerer Yuta Okkotsu shall be appointed as Yuji Itadori’s executioner.

We have bolded the most important point for this article, effectively showing what the higher-ups did to Gojo. He was declared a criminal, which had absolutely nothing to do with the truth, of course, but it reflected the higher-ups’ sentiments towards the guy. They basically stated that Gojo and Geto were working together to incite the Shibuya Incident and that Gojo was at fault just as much as Geto, which was absurd.

Not only did Gojo kill Geto in Jujutsu Kaisen 0, but he never worked with Pseudo-Geto – he came to Shibuya to stop the villains, not to work with them. These five points were full of lies – Geto was not alive, it was Kenjaku; Gojo was not an accomplice; Yaga never incited anyone and had nothing to do with the Shibuya Incident – but they showed how important politics was and how people in power can make lies, seemingly, become truth. And while the statements were false, their implications and consequences were not, as we are about to see.

Why was Gojo blamed for Shibuya? His exile was a way for the higher-ups to rid themselves of a dangerous individual who often disobeyed them!

Namely, the accusation put forward against Satoru Gojo was a blatant lie, but the higher-ups used it so that they could punish Gojo. They knew he had nothing to do with Shibuya, but if they had acknowledged that, they wouldn’t have been able to punish him, so they turned a lie into truth and sanctioned Gojo by exiling him and turning on his allies (Yaga, Itadori). What they did not know was that Gojo had already anticipated that, and he came up with a contingency plan involving Yuta, but that is another story to tell.

What interests us here is – why did the higher-ups blame Gojo? Why did they want to get rid of him? Well, Gojo was definitely not a villain, but the higher-ups were afraid of him. They were aware of his immense power and knew that he could wipe them out in a matter of moments. It was a political thing, actually, as Gojo represented a power greater than their own, which meant that he could overtake them anytime. Sure, Gojo would never do that, but when you’re in power, you become paranoid about losing that power. On top of that, Gojo had disobeyed their wishes on more than one occasion and did as he pleased (with Itadori being the best example).

It is no secret that he higher-ups wanted to get rid of Gojo, but they could not. When he was sealed, they simply used the situation and turned it to their own advantage, and that explains why they did what they did after Shibuya.
