Keanu Reeves has maintained an almost unparalleled level of public affection, yet his filmography reveals that even the most beloved stars are not immune to critical slumps. While the John Wick franchise and high-profile voice roles in Toy Story 4 and the Sonic the Hedgehog series have provided a massive safety net, his live-action output outside of those projects has often struggled to find its footing.

From the widely panned Matrix Resurrections to lesser-seen titles like Siberia and Replicas, the last decade has been marked by as many creative misfires as genuine hits. However, no disappointment in his long career compares to the bizarre saga of the 2000 thriller The Watcher.

Reeves has famously alleged that he only appeared in the film because his signature was forged on a contract by a director he once considered a friend. To avoid a protracted and expensive legal battle, he reluctantly agreed to participate, only to find himself frustrated when his role was expanded into a lead performance despite his cut-rate salary.

The experience was so draining that Reeves reportedly negotiated an agreement to remain silent about the production’s difficulties for a full year following its release. Once that embargo lifted, he was finally able to describe the situation as “a long, horrible story of pain and woe, and of deception and deceit!” Even during the promotion of the film, he struggled to hide his lack of enthusiasm.

“I read the script, and yech! Sorry about that,” he admitted at the time, offering a classic Keanu apology for a movie he felt trapped into making. Reeves is successfully pivoting back toward the experimental and comedic roles that defined his early career. He is currently starring in the dark comedy Outcome, which premiered on Apple TV on April 10.

Directed by Jonah Hill, the film features Reeves as Reef Hawk, a Hollywood star forced to go on a “redemption tour” after being extorted with a mysterious video. Critics have praised the performance as a self-aware send-up of his own “nicest guy in Hollywood” reputation, starring alongside Cameron Diaz and Matt Bomer.

Looking toward the future, Reeves is preparing for the August 2027 release of the high-concept sci-fi thriller Shiver, directed by Tim Miller. He is also set to return to the world of the supernatural with the long-gestating Constantine 2, which is currently in active pre-production.
