Who Are Luffy’s Mom and Dad? [Everything About Them]
While Luffy’s pirate exploits are well-documented, his family history is shrouded in mystery. We know he was raised by his grandfather, but do we know who Luffy’s mom and dad are?
Luffy’s biological father is the criminal Monkey D. Dragon, who was never present in Luffy’s life and left his son in the care of his own father, Luffy’s grandfather Monkey D. Garp. The identity of Luffy’s biological mother is still unknown; his adoptive mother was Curly Dadan. As per Oda himself, Luffy’s mother will probably never be introduced.
In this article, we are going to give you all the information you need to know about Luffy’s biological parents. You are going to find out who they are and some additional information about them and their lives, as well as when they had been revealed in the manga and the anime.
Who is Luffy’s mom?
The identity of Luffy’s mother has not yet been revealed. His family background initially revealed that he was raised by his paternal grandfather, Monkey D. Garp, but not much is known about his biological parents. And while his father’s identity has been revealed, the identity of Luffy’s mother has not been revealed yet.
Luffy did have a foster mother when he was little, though, and that was Curly Dadan. Curly Dadan is a friend of Monkey D. Garp and the foster mother of Portgas D. Ace, Monkey D. Luffy, and Sabo. Garp gave her Ace soon after he was born. Garp subsequently left Luffy at Dadan’s as well.
Dadan lives on Mount Corvo near the village of Fushia. She is the patron saint of the mountain bandits of the Dadan family and is a wanted criminal.
At first, Dadan didn’t want Luffy because she was already having a hard time dealing with Ace, but Garp insisted and she couldn’t refuse. Luffy didn’t like Dadan at first due to the boy’s past experience with another bandit, Higuma, and even went so far as to stick his tongue out at her during their first meal together.
However, over the time they grew up with each other, when Dadan went to defend Luffy and Ace from Bluejam, Luffy was greatly concerned for Dadan’s safety. Before he leaves to become a pirate, Luffy smiles and then says that he hates mountain bandits but loves Dadan and the other bandits.
After Ace died, Dadan wanted Luffy to support her because he was very important to her.
Who is Luffy’s biological mother?
As stated, we don’t know who Luffy’s biological mother is. Oda has, supposedly, drawn her in two panels published as part of volume 45 of the manga, but that is mere speculation on everybody’s part, since Oda never elaborated further on his statement.
When asked, Oda said that Luffy’s parents had already been drawn and that they would appear in volume 45 of the manga. Now, Luffy’s father (more on that later) did really appear in volume 45 and he was clearly identifiable, unlike his mother. There is a woman in the background of the panels showing Luffy’s father, so maybe that was who Oda was referring to.
But, that woman is only seen in the manga; she never speaks and her name is never revealed, so it could be that she is just a stock character and not actually Luffy’s mother. Be that as it may, this is the closest we’ve got to identify her but even with that, we know absolutely nothing. This seems to be in line with a statement made by Oda a couple of years ago when he said that “Luffy’s adventure began after he left his mother’s arms. I want to tell this young man’s story, so [his] mom is not part of it.”
In that aspect, it seems that Luffy’s mother is never going to be introduced to the manga; her name might be revealed and there certainly are a lot of theories, but from what Oda said, her name is probably going to remain a mystery. Why? “The answer is simple,” he said. “That’s because ‘mother’ is the opposite of ‘adventure’.”
Who is Luffy’s dad?
In episode 314 of the anime, which adapted chapter 432 of the manga, titled “Jack in the Box”, it was revealed that Luffy’s biological father was none other than the revolutionary criminal Monkey D. Dragon.
He is the famous leader of the Revolutionary Army who is trying to overthrow the World Government. He is the greatest enemy of the World Government and is commonly known as the “World’s Worst Criminal”.
Monkey D. Luffy is the son of Monkey D. Dragon. Like his father, Monkey D. Garp, he seems to have high expectations for Luffy. And while he has yet to introduce himself to Luffy, Dragon seems to support his son’s actions to this day.
He has appeared in Loguetown in order to see Luffy leave for the Grand Line and prevent Smoker from capturing him, showing that he cares somewhat for his son’s welfare (perhaps to push Luffy to become more mature). Dragon also seems to be very proud of his son because of all the trouble he has caused the world government.
His unusual habit of standing in the wind and facing East Blue (where he left Luffy), apparently means he misses his son. When he was informed of Luffy’s second intrusion into Marineford, he decided to focus on his own goals, and that Luffy was old enough (according to him) to take care of himself.
However, he does not seem to seek to make him a Revolutionary, letting him follow his own path.
Dragon’s personality is virtually unknown due to the many mysteries surrounding him, except for an obvious love for freedom and belief in fate, common traits of a “D.” bearer. Despite this, he is very serious about his crusade, warning his subordinates that the conflict against the World Government will be long, difficult, and fraught with pitfalls.
Unlike other members of his family or other “D.” carriers, he behaves stern and earnestly. However, he is often seen with a confident smile on his face.
Determined to keep the flame of the Revolution alive, he also seems to care about the innocent (presumably seeing the oppression of the world government towards them), as evidenced by the scene where he voluntarily saves the people of Gray Terminal and then proposes to them a post in the Revolutionary Army.
He also seems to care about his children as well, despite the fact that he left them to his father’s care. Dragon was primarily an idealist and he did not want his ideals jeopardized, even when faced with leaving his family. But he never forgot them and although he was not the father of the year, he did care about his family.
He apparently doesn’t like being asked anything about his past, or even just talking about it. He also has a strange habit of always turning and looking in the direction of East Blue when the wind starts to change course. His revolutionary comrade, Emporio Ivankov, attributes this habit to Dragon’s fatherly instinct, seeing as he left Luffy in East Blue.
He is described as “charismatic” by Brook. He advocates sincerity and discipline above all in his army, his goal is peace, he sees war only as a means of obtaining it, and not as something to be celebrated.
In what episode was Luffy’s dad revealed?
The revelation happened in episode 314 of the anime, “The Strongest Family Lineage? Luffy’s Father Revealed!”, which aired on June 17, 2007. In it, we also find a lot of details about Luffy’s past and his childhood.
