8 Main SpongeBob Characters’ Ages, Birthdays & Heights

SpongeBob SquarePants has to be one of the weirdest shows ever created. The possibilities are endless; you can let your imagination run free because anything is possible. It stars a sponge that’s best friends with a starfish and has a neighbor that’s an octopus but is ironically named Squidward. The deeper you go into the characters, the more significant the logical fallacies grow. But there’s no point in arguing against something in an animated TV show.

All that’s left to do is indulge in this world’s absurdity and stop trying to make sense of the show. With an open mind to weird answers that wouldn’t make sense otherwise, we can figure out how old these characters are, how tall they are, and when their birthdays are. What do we know about SpongeBob characters’ birthdays & ages?

Since the show has 14 seasons, received a spin-off called Kamp Koral, and has three movies released, there’s a lot of information to analyze and discuss. The show started airing in 1999 and has been renewed for a 14th season in 2022. Since the movies were all released between 1999 and 2022, we’ll say that the movies represent SpongeBob during that period, not the past or future, to make the calculations and theories about the character’s ages and birthdays easier.

SpongeBob SquarePants

Kamp Koral is the critical factor in determining the characters’ age differences. In this show, SpongeBob attends summer camp, where we meet and see all the other characters usually in the show. SpongeBob is ten years old in the show, and since he was born in 1986, that sets the Kamp Koral timeline to 1996.

Squidward Tentacles and Patrick Star

In Kamp Koral, SpongeBob attends camp with his friend Patrick Star, making them about the same age. There, they meet a slightly older pessimistic Squidward Tentacles who appears prepubescent and is a junior camp counselor. We can devise from this that Squidward is likely 12-13 years old during Kamp Koral.

Sandy Cheeks and Pearl Krabs

Along with Patrick, SpongeBob also camps out with his friend Sandy Cheeks, which allows us to assume that they are all of the same age – 10 years old. In the show, the camp is run by a single father, Mr. Krabs, who has a baby daughter Pearl. It’s said that Pearl was born in the 1990s, which would make her six years old in the show. If we look at her character design, it’s clear to see she’s still a baby.

Perhaps we could approach it from a different perspective, though; at what age do whales mature? The answer to this question is at 5 to 15 years old, but they reach their full size at 10-13 years old, which could make Pearl’s character design fit with her age of 6 years old in the show.

Mr. Krabs, Plankton, and Mrs. Puffs

Mr. Krabs was born in 1942, making him 54 years old in the show. Plankton and Mr. Krabs used to be friends, so we can conclude that Plankton is about the same age. Besides, they were born on the same date, further proving this theory.

The activities in the camp are overseen by Mrs. Puff which puts her in a position where she may be slightly younger than Mr. Krabs. At least ten years younger, which also checks out when we look at the table I made above. So, in the show, she might be 44 years old.

The problem with the original show

SpongeBob’s age was confirmed in the original show because there were two instances where his driver’s license was shown, and on it, it is confirmed that he was born in 1986. The problem is that he starts working at the Crusty Crab in the pilot episode that aired in 1999, which would make him only 13 years old.

If the air dates of episodes and real-world timelines match, it would have been illegal for SpongeBob to start working at Crusty Crab. Luckily, this can easily check out because we’ll take into account Mr. Krabs’ personality. It’s safe to say that Mr. Krabs is a cheapskate and always looks for ways to save money.

Considering that having an illegal worker means that he can’t file an official employee registration, it also means that he’s not legally obligated to pay the worker fair money. Mr. Krabs seems like someone who doesn’t always go the legal route if it means saving money, so it makes sense why Mr. Krabs would hire SpongeBob at such a young age.

Another reason why this is possible is that since SpongeBob is so young, he is very impressionable and doesn’t know his rights. But wait, this means that SpongeBob lives at only 13 years old. Legally, you can move out from your parent’s house at the age of 16, but it is possible that SpongeBob moved out earlier than that.

So what about his license, then? How can he be the owner of a driving license if he’s so young? Well, SpongeBob is known to be stubborn and isn’t known to be a quitter, so Mr. Puffs might have just let this one slide. It would also explain why he is such a bad driver, as I doubt any 13-year-old child is responsible enough to operate a vehicle.

What do we know about SpongeBob characters’ heights?

The height of these characters can be looked at from a different perspective, but luckily, we can refer to the show to help us make logical decisions about the characters’ height. Let’s first look at all characters and which ones are taller by default.

The tallest character out of all on the list is Pearl Krabs. This makes sense since she is a whale, but as we all know, we can’t everything we see in the show to real-life logic, and the thing that proves this is how taller Pearl is than other characters in the show. Let’s look at a photo with Pearl in it to see how tall she is.

The height difference is clearly there but doesn’t make sense considering Mr. Krabs is a crab, SpongeBob is a sponge, Patrick is a starfish, and so on. The best way to analyze character differences is to look at how their height is portrayed in the real world. SpongeBob is no stranger to stepping out into our world, so it’s easy to do this by analyzing an episode from the show’s second season where Sandy fights with the rest of the characters about which is better – sea or land creatures.

In the episode called Pressure, Sandy challenges the other characters to set foot outside the ocean on the famous remote island that appears in the show’s theme song. In it, we see how small the characters are, which proves that they are only a few inches tall, and we can’t talk about their height in feet.

This is also what makes Pearl small, and even though she is a lot taller than the rest, her height can only ever be measured in inches as well. If you’re also curious about why Mr. Krabs is so small on the table, I didn’t consider that his eyes make him appear much taller than he actually is.

The same goes for Sandy Cheeks. If you don’t count on her suit that she uses to breathe underwater, she’s a lot shorter. She is, after all, a depiction of a squirrel that tends to be small in real life and cartoons like SpongeBob SquarePants.
