‘Malcolm in the Middle’ Reboot Reportedly Set for April Filming—With a Non-binary Twist on the Youngest Child

Back in 2016, Bryan Cranston first shared his interest in a Malcolm in the Middle reunion. By 2021, Frankie Muniz revealed on Steve-O’s podcast that Cranston was actively writing a script for a reunion movie. He also mentioned that most of the original cast was ready to return—except for one unnamed person.

By December 2024, Disney+ officially announced a four-episode ‘Malcolm in the Middle’ revival, with Muniz, Cranston, and Jane Kaczmarek reprising their roles. The story will follow Malcolm and his daughter as they attend Hal and Lois’ 40th wedding anniversary party. Originally pitched as a two-hour movie, the project was restructured into four 30-minute episodes. Filming is set to begin in April 2025, aligning with Muniz’s NASCAR schedule.

Now notable industry insider, Daniel Richtman shared on his private Patreon some rumors related to the reboot. According to the insider the reboot is scheduled to begin filming in April, which we already knew. But, In this new version, Lois and Hal’s youngest child will be a 16-year-old non-binary teenager.

This means the reboot will introduce a new dynamic to the family, updating the story to reflect more modern themes while continuing the show’s signature humor and family chaos.

The original run of ‘Malcolm in the Middle’ aired from January 9, 2000, to May 14, 2006. The show ran for seven seasons, with a total of 151 episodes. It followed the life of Malcolm, a young boy with a genius IQ, and his quirky, dysfunctional family. The show was ultimately canceled.
