Only, everything changes on his return when he detects, thanks to his keen sense of smell, a strong smell of blood: he rushes home and finds his family massacred.

Why it’s like Hell’s Paradise: Just like it was the case with the anime series, you needn’t look further than Demon Slayer if you want a work that is similar to Hell’s Paradise. Demon Slayer is a truly great manga, and it has become a real shonen classic, which is why it has all the elements that Hell’s Paradise fans will enjoy. It also has a very similar storyline.

2. Noragami

Original Run: December 6, 2010 – present
Number of Volumes: 25 + 2 specials

Why you should watch it: Before she was struck by a bus while attempting to stop someone from being driven over, Hiyori Iki was an ordinary middle school student. Later revealed to be God Yato, the stranger is dressed in a sports suit and a scarf. She turns into half an ayakashi, a monster, as a result of this tragedy. She asks Yato to help her return to normal when she runs into him again and discovers that he is a deity. However, Yato recently misplaced his sacred sword (shinki), a different magical creature that aids a deity and increases his might.

Why it’s like Hell’s Paradise: Noragami combines a lot of traditional shonen elements into its urban fantasy plot, which is why it might not be the first pick for hardcore fans of Hell’s Paradise, who might prefer traditional dark fantasy, but don’t let it fool you! Noragami is a truly brilliant title that we are certain you are going to enjoy.

3. Bleach

Why it’s like Hell’s Paradise: Bleach is a shonen classic, and Hell’s Paradise has a lot of similar elements, both in terms of the battles and the setting. And while Bleach has a much larger storyline than Hell’s Paradise, the similarities are nevertheless so great that we couldn’t really not put Bleach on this list.

4. CLAYMORE

Original Run: June 6, 2001 – October 4, 2014
Number of Volumes: 27

What it’s about: The events of Claymore take place in a made-up universe where humans and a demon species known as Yoma—natural predators of humans—coexist (in the manga, they are also known as Specters). The Yoma’s unique ability to assume human shape enables them to live covertly among people. Only the female fighters known among humans as Claymores, who are beings made from humans by a covert organization, are capable of identifying these monsters and eliminating them.

Why it’s like Hell’s Paradise: We cannot deny that CLAYMORE is much darker than Hell’s Paradise and that it is not an ideal pick, but with the manga being complete, we can definitely say that CLAYMORE will be for those fans that like darker works and that the plot idea is similar enough for you to enjoy it.

5. Tokyo Ghoul

Original Run: September 8, 2011 – September 18, 2014 / October 16, 2014 – July 5, 2018
Number of Volumes: 14 / 16

What it’s about: The story of Tokyo Ghoul revolves around the student Ken Kaneki, who falls in love with a young woman named Rize Kamishiro. After meeting her, she bites his shoulder in a secluded alley and reveals that she is a ghoul, which shocks Ken. As Rize is about to eat Ken, several large metal poles fall on her from the construction site of a building. Roze dies in the process, while Ken is rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Why it’s like Hell’s Paradise: Sui Ishida’s modern masterpiece is very similar to Hell’s Paradise in many ways, which is why we recommend it. The drawing style is somewhat similar, and both works are not afraid to tackle dark and complex topics. On top of that, there are many similarities between Kaneki and Gabimaru, the two protagonists.

6. Vagabond

Original Run: September 17, 1998 – May 21, 2015 (on hiatus)
Number of Volumes: 37

What it’s about: In 1600, the terrible battle of Sekigahara took place, establishing the Tokugawa shogun’s power. Shinmen Takezo, the son of a great samurai, is ready to do anything to survive among the fighters. Returning to his native village, he is rejected by the inhabitants for having deserted. Pursued, he then begins a long wandering with a single objective: to become the greatest samurai in Japan.

Why it’s like Hell’s Paradise: Well, Vagabond is definitely a title whose historical setting and complexity will look great to fans of Hell’s Paradise, but we have to say that, like CLAYMORE, Vagabond is a very dark and adult-oriented series, so approach this cult classic only if you want to enjoy a darker and more mature storyline.

7. Jujutsu Kaisen 0

He meets Satoru Gojo, a sorcerer, and joins the Tokyo Institute of Occult Arts under his guidance so he can learn to manage Rika and battle bad entities simultaneously.

Why it’s like Hell’s Paradise: Well, Jujutsu Kaisen 0, the prequel to Jujutsu Kaisen, is a great combination of dark and urban fantasy. And while it is set in the modern era, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is in every other aspect very similar to Hell’s Paradise, which is why we are certain that you are going to enjoy it.

8. Jujutsu Kaisen

Original Run: March 5, 2018 – present
Number of Volumes: 18

What it’s about: The plot of Jujutsu Kaisen takes place in a world where curses are created from the negative emotions of Humans. Thus, to protect places with a high concentration of these emotions, such as schools or hospitals, these infrastructures have a relic, a receptacle of a curse, because we can only fight against curses with a more powerful curse. These are invisible to human eyes except for a handful of people, for example, exorcists. The exorcist’s job is to eliminate the curses and thus protect the people from them, but this is not without risks because these plagues can be more or less powerful.

Why it’s like Hell’s Paradise: Well, just like Jujutsu Kaisen 0, Jujutsu Kaisen is a title that shares almost everything with Hell’s Paradise, save for the setting. The characters are intriguing, the monsters are amazingly crafted, and the story is as thrilling as you’d expect; add some great battles to that, and you’ve got yourselves a manga you’ll definitely love.

9. Chainsaw Man

Original Run: December 3, 2018 – present
Number of Volumes: 11

What it’s about: The story takes place in a world where demons are born from human fears. Demons are often dangerous and malevolent, their power proportional to how strongly their corresponding fear is incited into the collective human consciousness. However, humans can sign contracts with them to use their powers.

Why it’s like Hell’s Paradise: Well, Chainsaw Man is a title that is also set in the modern era, but there are several similarities between these two series, which is why you’ll definitely enjoy Chainsaw Man. The monsters are bizarre, the series questions some essential aspects of human nature, and the fights are truly epic, which should be enough for fans of Hell’s Paradise.

10. Kemono Jihen

What it’s about: The Kemono Agency for Supernatural Phenomena sends detective Kohachi Inugami to a remote village. For some time now, dead animals have been found there on the new moon, whose innards have been eaten. In the village, Inugami meets the neglected boy Kabane, who is avoided by all villagers and, instead of going to school, works in the fields.

Why it’s like Hell’s Paradise: Kemono Jihen is an ongoing manga series that is more on the monster and supernatural side, which is why it is a great title for Hell’s Paradise fans. It is set in modern times, which is a major difference, but in between all the monsters and the fights, you won’t even notice that detail.
