‘Marshals’ Season 2 Episode 2 Recap & Ending Explained: Cal’s Diagnosis and Kayce’s Fear for Tate
This latest ‘Marshals’ recap covers “End of Watch,” which aired on Sunday, October 11, at 8 p.m. ET and PT. Dana Greenblatt and Bryan Garcia wrote the episode, and Ruben Garcia directed it. CBS described it as a story about a former cop who launches a killing spree against those he blames for sabotaging his career, with one of the Marshals ending up in his crosshairs.
The case closes within the hour, but the ending explained is more about what the team carries home. Kayce is still building defenses around East Camp to keep Tate safe, and Cal finally tells the team about his illness. Spoilers follow for anyone who has not yet seen the episode.
Marshals Episode Recap and the Hunt for Wayne Plummer
The episode opens with a sniper killing a man who is simply walking around Butte Reservoir. The team is then assigned to bring in Wayne Plummer, a former SWAT officer wanted for making and selling homemade suppressors.
Belle freezes inside his house after hearing a click, and Kayce confirms she is standing on a bomb. Kayce disarms it, and Cal reminds the others that the two of them know explosives from their time as SEALs. Andrea then finds a manifesto showing Wayne intended to go after people who punish others unfairly.
Belle’s search of his work history shows he was hired by many law enforcement agencies and fired from every one of them. A pair of sheriff deputies approach his vehicle, and one of them had filed the complaint that cost Wayne his last job. By the time Kayce and Andrea arrive, that deputy is dead and his partner is barely holding on.
Ending Explained at the Coroner’s Office
The team realizes many names on Wayne’s list will be at the coroner’s office for the dignified transfer of the fallen deputy. Kayce and Andrea head to the ceremony while Cal and Belle clear the surrounding buildings. Harry Gifford survives a shot because he was wearing a vest.
Belle works out that a pair of shooters is involved, with Wayne firing from a top floor window and his son positioned on the roof. Wayne refuses to drop his weapon and is killed. His son surrenders afterward.
Kayce tells the young man there is no shame in loyalty to family and that today should be his father’s legacy, not his own. Andrea arrests him without further violence. One review reads the case as a study of grievance that cannot tolerate scrutiny.
The more pointed reveal comes afterward. Cal is furious that Harry never told the team he fired Wayne from the highway patrol 18 years ago. Cal then admits he also kept Wayne’s son from passing the academy, and Harry promises there will be no more secrets.
Kayce Dutton and Tate After the Kidnapping
Andrea asks Kayce whether he is building a fortress, and he answers that he will do whatever it takes to keep Tate safe. Tom Weaver was denied release to attend his daughter Dolly’s funeral, and Andrea thinks Kayce should go for closure.
Kayce even hears Tate yelling when no one else hears anything, which shows how much the fear has taken hold of him. At John’s grave, Tate tells his father he no longer needs rescuing, and Kayce answers that the family legacy takes a heavy toll.
TV Fanatic observed that, although the case is unrelated, it mirrors a version of the future where Tate gets pulled into things he has no business being part of. Another review frames the hour as a question of whether protecting a family means controlling its future.
Kayce tells Rainwater he worries Tate will turn out like him and believes no Dutton man should become his father. Rainwater replies that Kayce’s concern is proof he is not like John, though no one can promise Tate will escape the destruction around him.
Cal’s Cancer Diagnosis and Belle’s Family Pressure
Cal confirms his doctor wants chemo, radiation and then surgery, and Belle urges him to follow that plan and tell the team. He insists on waiting until surgery is close. By the end of the night he tells everyone he has a rare form of lung cancer and promises it will not interfere with work.
Andrea tells him the team has his back, and Kayce says he is there for whatever Cal needs. Cal has still not told his daughter, Maddie, and Miles uses that secret to get himself off desk duty.
The official synopsis said Belle struggles to keep her family life stable. Her son, Braxton, saw the news and will not sleep until she comes home, so she cancels drinks with the team and agrees to sleep in his bed. She also insists her marriage is over, but says she must make sure her son is all right.
Rainwater faces his own pressure at Broken Rock, where Corinne Irons leads a group that blames his fight over the mine for her husband’s death. The next episode, “Falling Sky,” airs October 18 on CBS. With Cal’s diagnosis still hidden from Maddie and Rainwater’s leadership under growing strain, which of these storylines do you think will test the ‘Marshals’ team hardest in the weeks ahead?
