Marvel Anticipates ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ as Make-or-Break – Here’s the Lowdown

The MCU has a lineup of projects scheduled for release in 2024, 2025, and beyond. Among them, ‘Avengers 5’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ stand out as highly anticipated, continuing the tradition of grand crossovers in the MCU.
While details about these projects remain scarce, it was expected that Kang the Conqueror would replace Thanos as the primary antagonist in the Multiverse Saga. However, following the release of ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,’ it became evident that audience reception to the new villain was not as expected. Additionally, Jonathan Majors, who portrayed Kang and his variants, encountered legal issues and was subsequently dismissed from the role.
Following Jonathan Majors’ dismissal, various theories have emerged speculating about the true villain of the MCU being unveiled in ‘Secret Wars.’ These theories range from Doctor Doom to the Beyonder, drawing from the original comic storyline.
There’s also been discussion about potential cameos, with the buzz reaching Marvel Studios executives. They recognize the heightened anticipation surrounding ‘Secret Wars’ and are leveraging it to their advantage.
At the 2024 CinemaCon, numerous projects were showcased alongside entertaining short videos. One notable video featured an alleged theater spot intended to remind audiences to silence their phones, with Deadpool attempting to reveal ‘Secret Wars’ details to Wolverine amidst constant interruptions, leading to Wolverine’s frustration.
This shows that the studio understands fan expectations, and luckily, they have plenty of time to come up with something fantastic.
However, there’s a persistent rumor that has been circulating for months. There’s been speculation that the MCU will undergo a complete reboot with ‘Secret Wars.’ Joanna Robinson mentioned in her latest book that Kevin Feige hinted at this possibility with a quote.
“We have a quote from Kevin Feige sort of implying… that like Secret Wars will serve as a soft reboot in which they can prune everything. That’s not to use a Loki-ism. Prune everything that’s not working and just keep what is [working], or bring back people you thought were gone forever.”
We’re unsure about the exact premise of ‘Secret Wars,’ but it seems logical for it to serve as a reboot. The MCU is becoming increasingly crowded with major characters, especially with the potential inclusion of the X-Men and Fantastic Four.
Recent rumors suggest that the writers for ‘Kang Dynasty’ and ‘Secret Wars’ have been replaced, and ‘Deadpool 3’ is rumored to directly lead into the events of ‘Secret Wars.’ This indicates that multiverse and timeline jumping will likely play a significant role.
As of now, ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ is scheduled to conclude the Multiverse Saga on May 7, 2027.
