Recently, there has been a lot of negative news about the upcoming MCU Blade reboot. After months of problems and Yann Demange leaving as director, the film has now been taken off Disney’s 2025 release schedule.
This move was expected since it seemed very unlikely the movie could meet its November 2025 deadline. It still doesn’t have a filming date, a finished script, or a director.
Recent reports from industry insider Daniel Richtman say that the Blade movie has been changed again. He claims that filming is set to start in 2025 in the United Kingdom. The film will have a smaller budget and is expected to be very dark, rated R, as they are working on a new script.
This news is positive, especially since reports say Mahershala Ali is still involved with the project. This makes sense because insiders say he wants to turn Blade into his own version of Black Panther.
We don’t know much about the movie’s plot yet, but past reports have suggested that the story changes every time a new writer comes on board.
Back in May 2013, Marvel Studios had a script ready for a new Blade film after getting the rights back from New Line Cinema. In February 2019, Mahershala Ali showed interest in starring in the film after his role in Luke Cage. Marvel officially announced him as Blade at San Diego Comic-Con in July, and he also had an uncredited voice cameo in Eternals (2021).
In February 2021, Stacy Osei-Kuffour was hired to write the script, and by September, Bassam Tariq was brought on to direct. However, Tariq left a year later because of changes in production and creative differences.
Yann Demange was set to direct in November 2022 while Michael Starrbury worked on the script. Nic Pizzolatto joined as a writer in April 2023, and by November, Michael Green was also hired to write a new script. Demange left the project in June 2024, and Pearson was brought in to rewrite it.
The original story was supposed to focus on Blade’s daughter and take place in the past. Before Demange left, the story was described as “just Blade killing vampires,” which fans were mostly okay with.
There are no updates yet on how the movie connects to the Midnight Sons project.
