Michael Rosenbaum on ‘Smallville’ Sequel Show: “It Has to Be the Right Time”
Superman has been featured in numerous adaptations across different media, from animated series to live-action productions, providing plenty of entertainment options. One standout project is ‘Smallville,’ a live-action TV series that aired from 2002 to 2011, spanning 10 seasons. Many fans consider ‘Smallville’ to have showcased the best portrayal of a young Superman, portrayed by Tom Welling, and his archenemy, Lex Luthor, played by Michael Rosenbaum.
This year marks 13 years since the show concluded, and during this time, Rosenbaum and the original creators have been busy. They’ve been collaborating on an animated revival of the series, serving as a sequel to the original ‘Smallville.’ Rosenbaum provided an update on the project in a recent interview with Screenrant.
All I could share is that it’s a great idea. We have Al and Miles, the creators of Smallville backing us up. When it’s the right time, we’d like to go and do this; pitch to Warner Bros. It has to be the right time, and right now is not the right time. We had the strike, we had a change of executives at DC — one being one of my best friends in the world, James Gunn. When the time’s right, I think it’s something that’s a no brainer, unless they have other ideas. We’d like to do it — the whole cast would like to do it. They would voice their own character from the show, and we have a concept of what the show is.
Rosenbaum is right that now might not be the best time to propose such a project. Gunn is already juggling a busy schedule with several upcoming DCU projects, most of which are still in early development or production stages. Additionally, there’s already been a Superman’series cancellation by Warner Brothers, aiming to avoid competition with the forthcoming ‘Superman’ slated for 2025, particularly ‘Superman & Lois,’ a CW show centered on Superman’s family life, which will wrap up after its fourth season this year.
There are also rumors circulating that Matt Reeves’ ‘The Batman – Part II’ was pushed back by a whole year due to concerns about competing with another Batman project in the DCU, despite initial agreements to develop it as part of Elseworlds stories.
Regardless, we hope Rosenbaum follows through on his plan and eventually pitches the show to Warner Bros. Got something to share? Feel free to comment below!
