Minecraft: How Long Does It Take for Potatoes to Grow? (& How To Grow Them Faster)
Farming is an integral part of Minecraft and because of that, we’ve already covered wheat farming as well as sugar cane farming. This guide is going to be focused on potatoes, a relatively common crop that can be found in Minecraft. Since potatoes have multiple purposes in the game, and unlike some other crops, they are harder to come by, we decided to bring you some vital information related to potato growth and farming. Let’s see how long it takes for potatoes to grow in Minecraft.
How to grow potatoes in Minecraft?
Before you attempt to grow potatoes you need to be aware that potatoes will grow only under the following conditions:
- Potatoes will grow only on farmland blocks; if farmland converts to regular dirt blocks, the potato will disappear
- A light level of 9 (or higher) is needed for potato growth; torches can be used to substitute sun if you intend to grow potatoes underground.
- You need to be near potatoes in order for them to grow (chunk needs to be loaded)
Potatoes yield 3 crops on average (minimum being 1 and maximum 5), and there’s a 2 % chance that your potato plant will yield you a poisonous potato. You can increase your potato yield by using a tool enchanted with fortune enchantment.

How do you get potatoes in Minecraft?
Potatoes don’t have seeds instead the whole vegetable serves as a seed (it’s the same with carrots). Potatoes can be found in villages (20 % chance), and they can be dropped by Zombies, husks, and zombie villagers. And lastly, potatoes can be looted from chests in Pillager Outposts, Shipwrecks, and Villages.
What can you do with potatoes in Minecraft?
Potatoes are primarily a food item in Minecraft. If you cook them on a furnace or campfire you will get a cooked and baked potato. Potatoes can also be used for breeding purposes. Pigs that see you holding a potato will follow you, you can also throw potatoes to villagers in order for them to breed as well. If you plan on composting with potatoes, always make sure to use baked potatoes as they have a higher chance of raising the compost level by 1 (85%) in comparison to regular potatoes (65 %)
How to grow potatoes faster?
You can grow potatoes faster by making sure your crops have adequate conditions. Make sure that your potatoes are growing on farmland blocks, with proper hydration and adequate light levels, you also need to be nearby. You can speed up the process by using bone meal and bees as well. Both bone meal and bees can skip several stages of growth and allow you to harvest potatoes faster.

And that’s pretty much it, growing potatoes is pretty straightforward and easy, the hard part is waiting for them to be ready. Luckily, if you follow our advice it should take less time!
