GTA V: Mods Are Not Banned! Here’s How To Use Them Safely

Share:

Considering just how many dedicated fans Grand Theft Auto has, there’s no surprise that many players have started using mods. However, many fans are still wondering if GTA mods are banned in multiplayer and single-player, as well as how to use mods without getting banned.

  • Article Breakdown:
  • Players are technically allowed to use single-player mods for GTA Story Mode, but using any type of mod or mod menu in GTA Online multiplayer would directly violate the Terms of Service.
  • Any player found using a mod in GTA Online (or found with a single-player GTA Story Mode mod while in GTA Online) will be subject to a temporary suspension along with a progress penalty, while recurring offenses will result in a permanent user account ban.

GTA Mods

Mods have been a staple among gamers for many years, offering endless room for customization – occasionally topped off with some interesting themes that can revamp the gameplay experience altogether. However, the rules regarding the use of mods are not always clear-cut for every game title, and there’s been quite a lot of confusion regarding the use of mods in GTA as a result.

While Rockstar Games (Rockstar North) has never exactly promoted the use of mods, they have made it clear that they do not mind players using mods in certain cases. However, in other cases, Rockstar games will be extremely quick to ban players to various degrees, and they do have the right to seek legal action if they feel the need to do so.

Using Mods in GTA Story Mode (Single-Player)

There are tons of amazing GTA mods out there, many of which can be undeniably tempting to use. Fans can introduce countless elements to their GTA playthrough, involving characters, enhancements for the overall gameplay experience, and much more.

Players have generally been free to use mods in GTA Story Mode, specifically on PC, detailed in the quotes below by Rockstar Games. Since the game is only enjoyed by the player, there is no room to make the entire game unfair to others – the main reason why mods are generally accepted for players enjoying GTA Story Mode.

“We have always appreciated the creative efforts of the PC modding community and we still fondly remember the awesome zombie invasion mod and original GTA map mod for GTA 4 PC among many other classics. To be clear, the modding policy in our license has not changed and is the same as for GTAIV.”

However, using mods in GTA Story Mode is still not entirely safe for players, even though players will not get banned for it. As with any modding program out there, using GTA mods will always involve relative risks – from viruses and issues that can tamper with your gaming setup to security threats and much more.

“Recent updates to GTA 5 PC had an unintended effect of making unplayable certain single player modifications. This was not intentional, no one has been banned for using single player modifications, and you should not worry about being banned or being relegated to the cheater pool just for using single player PC mods.”

It’s always best to make sure that the mods you use for GTA Story Mode are tried, tested, and safe, ensuring that the mod has already been used by many players without any serious issues. But, even in these cases, players may still encounter problems later down the line – particularly after any updates or patches to the game.

“It also bears mentioning that because game mods are by definition unauthorized, they may be broken by technical updates, cause instability, or affect your game in other unforeseen ways.”

As stated by Rockstar Games, there is always a chance that the use of mods can alter the gameplay experience in unintentional ways. The developers of the GTA saga cannot guarantee that future updates and patches will not break the player’s mod, which can result in breaking the game.

Using Mods in GTA Online (Multiplayer)

Enjoying mods in GTA Online multiplayer mode is an entirely different story since GTA Online is connected to official servers. The use of mods in GTA Online is frowned upon – not only by the developers of the title but also by the GTA community as a whole.

Using mods or mod menus in GTA Online is never accepted or encouraged by anyone. This is mainly because it can change the entire ecosystem and create ridiculously unfair advantages for the players using mods.

“Our primary focus is on protecting GTA Online against modifications that could give players an unfair advantage, disrupt gameplay, or cause griefing.”

Technically, modding GTA Online is seen as illegal to an extent – in the sense that it violates the Terms of Service, something all players have to agree to. It’s highly unlikely that Rockstar Games will ever pursue legal action for players who use mods in GTA Online, although this is not entirely out of the question, depending on the offense.

Some modders/ griefers have inflicted some serious damage to online multiplayer gaming communities – whether it be through stalking and harassing players resulting in lower player counts over time, or through modding in money which directly impacts the profits of the game developers. Generally speaking, Rockstar Games will ban anyone who uses mods in GTA Online, with the penalty becoming increasingly severe.

How to Use Mods Without Getting Banned in GTA

There may be risky methods for playing GTA Online with mods without getting caught, although these are not encouraged and will not be supported by other players. However, those using mods for GTA Story Mode should proceed with caution – making the wrong move can still get you banned.

Being banned for using “injectors” (which make up the majority of the most popular GTA mods) is also more likely than when using classic mods. Players who suddenly switch to GTA Online while having the relative mods installed will automatically be at risk of getting banned, even if they do not use them in GTA Online.

Many players will avoid this since they may be blocked from launching GTA Online with GTA single-player mods, but others may get “banned for no reason.” Simply deleting file folders does not necessarily work for removing modding programs – players really have to make sure that there is no trace of any mod before launching GTA Online.

What Happens if You Get Banned for Using GTA Mods?

Players will not get banned for using mods in GTA Story Mode, although they may still experience mod-related problems. However, players will need to make sure that they do not simply switch to GTA Online without properly removing their installed mods.

Getting caught using mods in GTA Online will lead to some serious consequences. Initially, the player will be suspended for a month and will lose their progress in-game, while getting caught using a mod again will result in a permanent user account ban – both of which are different from the “account wipe” penalty incurred by players who take advantage of other modders through money drops.

Any player who has been banned permanently will not be able to play the game on that account ever again. However, it will still be possible to start playing GTA Online from scratch by purchasing another copy of the game and creating a brand new user account to sign in.

That’s everything there is to know about using mods in GTA without getting banned. While using mods in GTA’s single-player Story Mode is generally supported, it still comes with a range of user risks. Players should avoid using mods in GTA Online’s multiplayer mode altogether, as this ruins the game for other players and leads to severe and permanent bans.
