Nathan Fillion Talks about Playing Guy Gardner: “For a Guy Who Likes to Play Flaws and Flawed People, Guy Gardner Is a Gold Mine”

When Gunn & Safran assumed control of DCEU, transforming it into DCU as co-chairmen and co-CEOs, they unveiled an ambitious lineup of movies and shows. Among them was ‘Lanterns,’ a live-action cosmic detective series centered on three prominent Green Lanterns from the comics.

While details about the show remain scarce, it’s confirmed that one of the featured Lanterns will be Guy Gardner, portrayed by Nathan Fillion, a long-standing fan-favorite choice for the role.

In a recent interview with Collider, Fillion expressed his immense excitement for the role and his deep affection for Guy Gardner’s character.

The reality is that people have flaws. We all have quirks. We all have vulnerabilities. You could have the most wonderful family, but be like, ‘Oh, my God, my dad drives me nuts. He’s got this one thing.’ Everybody’s got something, and I love to lean into those faults and flaws. It’s what makes people real and what allows audiences to relate, because we all know what that is. We all have our own. We witness it in other people. Guy Gardner is 90% flawed and doesn’t care. That’s one of his flaws. I think there’s a real freedom in playing that. So, for a guy who likes to play flaws and flawed people, Guy Gardner is a gold mine.

Fillion makes a valid observation about Guy Gardner’s flaws. He’s shown to be arrogant, impulsive, and often at odds with authority figures. These traits add complexity to his character and make him more relatable.

Fillion also shared the story of how he landed the role, and it’s pretty cool:

We were actually at the premiere party after Suicide Squad and he was in a huge crowd of people. We saw each other in the crowd and I congratulated him, ‘Oh, my God, that was amazing. It’s so great.’ He goes, ‘Hey, did Peter [Safran] tell you what we’ve got for you next?’ I said, ‘No, he hasn’t said.’ He looked around like someone was gonna be listening. We were in a throng of people, but he leaned over and said, ‘You’re gonna be Guy Gardner.

He’s also enthusiastic about James Gunn’s upcoming projects. He mentioned how he wasn’t initially interested in the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ comics until Gunn adapted them into a story about family in the movies. Most recently, Nathan portrayed Master Karja in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3,’ leading the Orgosentries and serving as the head of security on the Orgoscope.

It’ll be a while before we see Nathan in ‘Lanterns,’ as the show reportedly only has a completed script so far. However, we can expect to catch him in ‘Superman,’ set to be released in 2025. Got something to share? Drop us a comment below!
