Negative ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Reviews Stem From Fans Lacking Knowledge of the Universe: “I Don’t Get It, So I Don’t Like It!”

‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ is the MCU’s latest release, and it’s been a wild ride for everyone involved. The film marks the first appearance of Deadpool and Wolverine in the MCU, offering a fittingly Deadpool-style farewell to the Fox X-Men Universe while setting the stage for a significant future for mutants in the MCU.

The movie is also on course to become the most lucrative R-rated film of the year, proving to be a true box-office hit for the studio.

The reactions to the movie have been overwhelmingly positive. It currently holds an 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes (dropping by 1 point since yesterday, as I predicted) and boasts a 97% approval rating from audiences with over 5000 reviews.

While we’re still far from seeing the final consensus on these ratings, it’s clear that even a movie marketed as a fun ride has its detractors. A vocal minority of fans and critics don’t like it, which is understandable since you can’t please everyone. The most common complaints among negative reviews are the lack of a substantial plot and an overreliance on cameos, references, and jokes.

I must agree that the plot is extremely thin, built around cameos, variants, and jokes. Additionally, it does have an overabundance of cameos and references, but there’s a caveat—you won’t enjoy it if you don’t understand them.

Despite the producer’s claim that the movie is accessible to anyone, even without prior knowledge of the X-Men and Deadpool universes, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Many jokes will fall flat, and key characters will go unrecognized. Without having seen previous X-Men films, easily 50% of the movie won’t make any sense.

Let’s examine some of the negative reviews on Rotten Tomatoes:

The movie was made just to cash upon the wolverine and Deadpool duo. There was no real story, no real motive, and no real villain. The movie was made so that another movie could be made.

It was the typical Disney ruining something good, and Hugh and the cameos didnt save it. Probably better than most newer Marvel movies but not worth 20 dollars a head. I got a free ticket so that was the only reason I saw it. Not too big on Disney films anymore. But be warned it makes Deadpool 2 a great film.

The movie was terrible. No plot and just a cameo of Marvel characters. Total money grab. Dont waste your time.

I am very sequel fatigued at this point. The story is so boring. The beginning jokes sound like it was written by an out of touch A-list actor. Nothing new. Nothing that screams ” innovative”. Just something to stare at when bored and have nothing better to do. Walked out cause I could not stand it . SKIP.

This movie was so unbelievably bad. No story that made any sense or plot development. No meaningful attempt to make you care about the characters. A bunch of bad short lived cameos that added no plot depth as filler. A ton of raunchy jokes (which I’m all for, but were overdone and didn’t hit well). And a bunch of action scenes and special effects which again are a great filler for an objectively very poorly done movie on every level in terms of plot or acting. The good old Marvel Disney special. But everyone seems to love it so they’ll just keep it on goin. Looking forward to the next! SMH lol.

Worst Deadpool movie ever. Ruined as the last few avengers movies were ruined.. i miss good movies like the first iron man. Only one hero, not all that noise and senseless movement around. No “multiverse” stupidity….

I must reiterate that without prior knowledge of the universe, you won’t be able to enjoy this movie; it will just seem like an endless mix of cameos and pop-culture references. However, there’s a good reason for this approach. It’s the only logical transition for Deadpool into the MCU, and you’d understand if you’d watched the previous films.
