‘Eternally Yours’ Episode 4 Recap and Ending Explained: What the Broken Wolfsbane Chalice Means for the Coven

For a family of vampires, Halloween is closer to a hazard than a party, since costumes let werewolves move among humans unnoticed. The CBS comedy follows Charles and Liz, a vampire couple whose marriage has gone cold after 500 years. The series comes from Joe Port and Joe Wiseman, the showrunners who adapted ‘Ghosts’ for American audiences.

This ‘Eternally Yours’ recap covers the first Halloween outing, which aired Thursday, October 29. Liz invites her boss and his wife over for drinks, while the coven fears that Max has put them in danger of a werewolf attack after he uses an ancient protective relic as a candy bowl. The episode ends on an image that could change how the show handles its stakes.

Episode Recap and the 1649 Cold Open

The story begins in 1649, as Charles and Liz arrive late to a Halloween party and find several dead vampires. One of them is barely alive and says werewolves attacked, adding that the couple needs to find the Wolfsbane Chalice.

In the present day, baby vampire Max is still learning the rules, and he sets the relic out for trick or treaters. It goes missing, and Jesse and Emma start to panic. The panic grows because the household is already on edge about the holiday.

A girl from school asks Mort out, and when she comes over she is dressed convincingly as a werewolf. After a few tests involving keys and a tennis ball, the group decides the best course is to kick her out.

What the Wolfsbane Chalice Does for the Coven

The chalice turns out to be the only thing that protects the coven’s house from werewolf attacks, and Halloween is a particularly dangerous night. That context explains why a missing candy bowl becomes a household emergency. It also gives the cold open a clear payoff.

The explanation for the disappearance is far less dramatic. Phyllis walks in with the chalice, having found it outside and decided it would be a good holder for her Halloween sangria. That means McKenzie was never a werewolf, and she and Mort bond over the fact that both of them have unusual families.

Critics have responded to the structure as much as the jokes. One review called the episode the first proper multi storyline arc for the sitcom. Another enjoyed seeing Jesse, Emma and Max team up to protect Mort, though that storyline left the reviewer feeling a little sad and hollow.

Charles and Liz Face a Marriage Test

Liz learns that she is up for a permanent professorship, so she invites her boss Glen and his wife Susan to spend Halloween at her home. She does this without telling Charles. The couple shows up dressed as vampires, which does not help the mood.

Charles tries to appease Liz at first, but the cordiality ends when Glen raises the Prussians and defends their history. Charles then picks apart nearly everything Glen says, to the point that Liz almost loses the promotion.

Allegra Edwards explained the outburst to TV Insider by describing the buildup as “death by a thousand paper cuts.” Charles has lived through centuries of promotions and dinners with the boss, so he struggles to see why one more job matters. Liz experiences it as a modern woman with a career, so to her it matters a great deal.

Ending Explained and What Comes Next for the Coven

Charles makes things right by turning into a bat and forcing Glen and Susan back to the house, and he even agrees that the Prussians were wonderful people. The evening ends with the couple sharing their first intimate night in quite some time. One reviewer noted that the pair spend the whole episode together with no hint of intimacy until the final seconds.

The bigger problem arrives the next morning. Phyllis pulls the Wolfsbane Chalice out of the dishwasher, and it was not dishwasher safe, so the glass has broken in two. With the one artifact shielding the house from werewolves now broken, a future episode could put the coven in real danger.

Edwards has teased great guest stars, characters from Emma’s past, more about the twins and their abilities, and a destination for Phyllis that people could never foresee. Tim Meadows and Asif Ali are also set to guest star in upcoming episodes. With the Wolfsbane Chalice cracked in two, do you think the coven can keep the werewolves out, or has Max’s candy bowl experiment already doomed the house?
