Monkey D. Luffy, the protagonist of Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece manga, is known for his many epic fights. One of his more interesting fights was the one against the villainous Magellan, who poisoned Luffy and left him for dead. But, as fans know, Luffy did not die during this fight. In fact, he came back stronger than ever, and that is exactly what we are going to talk about today. Namely, surviving Magellan’s poison resulted in Luffy gaining a strong immunity against most, if not all poisons. In this article, we are going to tell you whether Luffy is really completely immune to poisons or not.

Luffy is not immune to poison. Luffy managed to survive Magellan’s poisoning thanks to Ivankov’s intervention, which also resulted in Luffy developing some amazing immunity to toxins. He is, though, not completely immune to toxins. As was seen later on, he is significantly more resistant to them than regular people, meaning that toxins that would usually kill someone would simply knock him out.

This article will explain Luffy’s immunity to poisons and other toxins. You will find out how exactly Luffy gained immunity to poisons, what happened during that moment, how it manifested later, and whether it really works on all types of poisons and toxins. There will be spoilers in this article, so if you’re not fully up-to-date with the events of One Piece, be careful how you approach this article.

Luffy became immune after surviving Magellan’s attack

Regarding Luffy’s immunity, its roots have to be traced back to the epic clash he had with Magellan in Impel Down. The battle was a fierce one, but it escalated when Luffy was finally able to hit Magellan after many attempts. Magellan is left surprised by the fact that he actually received a blow from Luffy, but the latter is in a worse state than him because the poison is eating away at his hands. Regardless, he gets up and hits the keeper with another “Jet Pistol.” Magellan then throws a poison ball flurry at him. Luffy dodges and throws a Jet Pistol. However, Magellan stops him with his hydra.

Thus nullifying the attack, Luffy finds himself with more poison on him. He then tries to get some distance, but Magellan releases a poisonous mist into the air called Poison Cloud, which blurs Luffy’s vision and, in the process, causes him to lose his hearing. Magellan tells Luffy that the cloud will eventually kill him. Luffy’s eyesight then begins to blur. In Level 6, Ace demands to know what’s happening upstairs on the upper floors, but the guards say it’s nothing. Despite everything, Luffy tries to attack Magellan again, but the attack doesn’t reach him, and the poison continues to affect him. Magellan is still amazed by his mental and physical strength.

Again missing his attack, Luffy tries again. Finally deciding to call it a day, Magellan totally engulfs Luffy in his “Hydra” to terminate the conflict. After being poisoned from head to toe, Luffy is defeated. Magellan claims it’s retribution for attempting to attack Impel Down and believes Luffy would experience hell in a day. Even though Luffy will die anyhow, Magellan orders the guards to hurl him to level 5, as Luffy feebly murmurs Ace’s name.

But it did not happen like that. Emporio Ivankov soon found Luffy, and when Luffy told him, weakly, that he should go save Bon Kurei, Ivankov decided to save him as well. He took him to his “Newkama Land” on Level 5.5 and chained him to a platform, explaining that he would take away ten years of his life to give him a very slim chance of surviving the poison.

He then injected him with healing hormones and observed Luffy suffer extreme pain, as the healing process was such. Inazuma, who was there along with Ivankov, assumed that it would take Luffy at least 2.5 days to heal, but the Straw Hat resisted the poison after just 20 hours, waking up weak and hungry. He was then given an amount of food that should have lasted for days, and he consumed it in just half an hour, getting back in full shape easily and quickly. He thus gained amazing immunity and was able to escape Impel Down.

Luffy’s immunity is not complete, as the series has shown us

Now, as we have said, the experience of surviving Magellan’s extremely potent poison increased Luffy’s immunity, and he was now completely immune to most poisons, toxins, and even diseases. Namely, Magellan’s poison is extremely potent and lethal, so the fact that Luffy was able to survive it, thanks to Ivankov’s intervention, means that he developed immunity to everything that was actually weaker than Magellan’s poison, and that included a whole plethora of substances that Luffy was now completely immune to. This included Caesar Clown’s poisonous gases, which had absolutely no effect on Luffy.

But is Luffy’s immunity truly complete? No, it isn’t, but as far as we understand, it is night complete. Namely, there were several instances where Luffy was affected by a poison or toxin. For example, when he consumed the extremely lethal poisonous skin of the Armored Stonefish, he fell into a coma but did not die (the skin usually kills a person instantly). He also needed some treatment from Chopper when he was hit with Queen’s Excite Bullets, but the bullets seemingly had very little effect on him, although they carried a disease inside them.

What does this mean? Well, this means that Luffy is not completely immune to the effects of extremely strong poisons and toxins, but as far as we can understand, he cannot die from poisoning. The poison will somehow affect him, but it won’t kill him, regardless of how strong it is. This is the result of his immunity, which is strong and almost perfect, but some substances can get through his defenses and have some effect on him.
