‘One Piece’ Just Announced Two Brand-New Movies, and One Finally Tackles a Legendary Battle
‘One Piece’ has spent nearly three decades building one of the richest mythologies in manga and anime history, and its creator, Eiichiro Oda, has never been shy about teasing the moments fans have waited years to see animated. Every major event tied to the franchise’s past has taken on an almost mythic weight among longtime readers, discussed and theorized about long before any official confirmation ever arrives.
That anticipation reached a new peak during ONE PIECE DAY ’26, an annual celebration where the franchise typically saves its biggest reveals for last. Fans tuning in got exactly that, with Oda having already hinted weeks earlier at Jump Festa 2026 that something major was coming, without giving away what it actually was.
At the very end of the event, ‘One Piece’ officially confirmed two brand-new films: ‘One Piece Film: God Valley,’ set for release in Japan in the summer of 2027, and a second movie titled ‘One Piece Film: BAAD,’ scheduled for 2029. Together, they mark the franchise’s 15th and 16th theatrical films.
‘God Valley’ is especially significant because it finally brings the God Valley Incident to the screen, one of the most pivotal flashback events in the entire ‘One Piece’ story. The clash centers on Gol D. Roger teaming up with Monkey D. Garp to take down the pirate crew Rocks, a confrontation that has shaped the series’ modern power structure for years.
The announcement trailer leaned directly into that history, featuring the three key figures at the center of the incident rather than any new or original characters. For a fandom that has spent years piecing together fragments of this backstory from scattered dialogue and flashbacks, seeing it confirmed as a full theatrical film is a significant moment.
Less is currently known about ‘BAAD,’ including basic plot details, though its 2029 release places it two years after ‘God Valley’ hits theaters. That timing lines up meaningfully with the franchise’s broader calendar, since the ‘One Piece’ manga will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2027, while the anime adaptation reaches its own 30th anniversary in 2029.
These two films will follow ‘One Piece Film: Red,’ the franchise’s last theatrical release, which premiered in Japan in August 2022. That film drew roughly 1.57 million attendees in its opening weekend alone, generating over ¥2.25 billion, figures that made it the top-performing movie opening of that year in Japan and eventually the highest-grossing film in the franchise’s history.
The new film announcements arrived alongside other major reveals at the event, including results from the franchise’s second worldwide character popularity poll, where Luffy was voted the most popular character once again. Additional casting news for the live-action adaptation’s third season was also revealed, introducing actors for Koza, Pell, Toto, and Chaka ahead of the story’s move into the Alabasta arc.
Since its manga serialization began in 1997, ‘One Piece’ has sold more than 600 million copies in print worldwide, and the anime, produced by Toei Animation, has been airing continuously since 1999. The series is currently deep into its Elbaf arc, having resumed new episodes earlier this year after a brief hiatus.

With two new films now locked in for 2027 and 2029, and the story continuing to build toward its endgame in both the manga and anime, ‘One Piece’ shows no signs of slowing its momentum as it heads toward its 30th anniversary celebrations. For a fandom that has waited years for God Valley to make it to screen, the wait finally has an end date.
