‘One Piece’: What Is “That” Devil Fruit the Five Elders Are Talking About & What Are Its Powers?
In the world of One Piece, the Devil Fruits are legendary fruits that are among the most important parts of the large(r) One Piece lore. These fruits grant their users various special abilities if eaten, but they also make them incapable of swimming for the duration of their lives. There are several types of Devil Fruits, based on how their powers manifest themselves and how they are created. In the most recent episode of the One Piece anime series, the Five Elders, a vile group of World Government officials, discussed a special Devil Fruit, claiming that “that” Fruit has not been awakened for centuries and that its mere existence should only be a legend. In this article, you are going to find everything you need to know about Devil Fruit.
The Five Elders were talking about a mythical Devil Fruit whose mere existence should only be a legend. The Devil Fruit they were talking about is the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, which is related to the legendary Sun God, Nika. As it will be revealed later in the anime, the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika is actually Luffy’s Gomu Gomu no Mi, and this fact will be crucial in the Straw Hat captain defeating Kaido in Wano Country.
Now that we’ve given you a short introduction let us continue with this article’s topic – the identity of “that” Devil Fruit that the Five Elders were talking about. As you can see in our short answer, the story is going to be connected to the series’ protagonist, Monkey D. Luffy. We have revealed all the relevant information in our brief answer. In the rest of the article, we will expand on this information by giving you all the relevant information and our analysis of the facts. Of course, if you’re not fully up-to-date with the most recent events in the manga, we have to warn you that spoilers will be present in the article.
The Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika is connected to the legend of Joy Boy
Those who have seen Episode 1064 of the One Piece anime will know that the majority of the episode was related to Luffy’s fight against Kaido, but it wasn’t the whole episode, as we were provided with a brief scene showing the Five Elders, a much-despised group of villains who operate from the shadows. As most fans will know, their appearance usually means either trouble or the revelation of some long-hidden fact that they are aware of, but the rest of the world is not. Episode 1064 provided us with the latter.
Namely, in the episode, we see the Five Elders discuss the current situation, as they always do. They complained about Levely a bit before shifting to the events in Wano, concluding that they had to act immediately. They also mention how Nico Robin needs to be captured and killed this time, as she is a danger to them because of the skills and knowledge she possesses.
We know that a fleet of Marines was sent to Wano, and a large shadow could be observed in their vicinity. It initially looked like an island, but it turned out to be the giant elephant Zunesha, carrying Zou Island on its back (Zou Island is the home of the Minks). We have already written about Zunesha here on Fiction Horizon, so you probably know that the elephant is not only an important part of the lore, but he is also a character closely related to the legend of Joy Boy, as he is seemingly the only one who knew the original Joy Boy and who would be able to recognize the new Joy Boy if he were to see him.
Building on that, the Five Elders mention “that” Devil Fruit as another potential danger. Namely, we find out then that there is an old, probably mythical Devil Fruit that is enormously powerful but whose true powers have not been awakened for centuries. This is a new trait we were introduced to, as it was not known that Devil Fruits could keep their true powers dormant for a time and that they could be activated later.
The Five Elders comment on how the World Government renamed this specific Devil Fruit at one point so that its true powers would remain hidden from the world. At this moment, they did not reveal which Devil Fruit they are talking about, but we know the answer, and we are going to tell you here.
Namely, the Devil Fruit in question is the Gomu Gomu no Mi, Luffy’s Devil Fruit. The Gomu Gomu no Mi is a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit introduced early on in the series. Shanks and his band of pirates brought this fruit to Foosha Village in Party’s Bar several years ago, where Luffy ate it out of anger at Shanks when he was a child. Since then, his body has been able to stretch like rubber at will.
And while the Gomu Gomu no Mi has been a part of the lore for years, with no problems whatsoever, the events in Wano Country revealed that there is a much deeper story related to that Devil Fruit.
Namely, as we’ve said, “that” Devil Fruit the Five Elders were seen talking about is actually the Gomu Gomu no Mi, but as they implied, the Gomu Gomu no Mi is not its real name, and it is actually not a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit. In reality, the Gomu Gomu no Mi is the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, a Mythical Zoan-type fruit that gives the user some enormous abilities and the status of a God, namely Nika (we have also discussed this theory here on Fiction Horizon in our earlier texts).
It is not known how the true powers of the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, were hidden, but the Five Elders theorized that it might be due to the will of the fruit itself; this is why the World Government had been unable to find it for such a long time. At one point, they simply deleted the original name from the old Devil Fruit Encyclopaedia and renamed it Gomu Gomu no Mi, as well as reclassified it as a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit.
Who’s-Who, an agent of CP9, eventually found the Fruit and was supposed to bring it to the Five Elders, but it was ultimately taken from him, seemingly by Shanks, and this is how Luffy actually came to eat it. The Hito Hito no Mi Model: Nika will prove essential in defeating Kaido later on.
