Scopper Gaban is a former member of Roger’s pirate crew
Scopper Gaban’s story has not been explored in detail, and we don’t really know too much about his backstory, save for the obvious fact that he, at some unspecified time in the past, joined the Roger Pirates. One day the crew attacked a ship, where some found a devil fruit. The captain said that whoever wanted to could eat it, which Buggy did.
More than twenty-eight years before the narrative begins, the crew sailed to Water Seven, where the carpenter Tom built the Oro Jackson for them. Twenty-five years before the narrative begins, they encounter Shiki’s fleet. Buggy, who feared for his life, tried vainly to persuade the captain not to fight. Gaban thus grabbed the pompon on his cap to hold him back, telling him that he had to resign because they had been seeing Roger for a lifetime and had never managed to stop him.
Thus, he participated in the Edd War battle, where a sudden storm sank half of the ships of the Golden Lion and allowed Roger’s crew to escape. The following year, the crew landed on an island where they defeated some marines. Later the Whitebeard Pirates also arrived, and Roger decided to have one last showdown with his rival. The two crews battled for three days straight, eventually feasting together on the fourth day.
Soon after, the Kozuki family embarked on the Oro Jackson, as Roger begged Newgate to lend him Kozuki Oden for a year to decipher the found Poneglyph and achieve his goal. On that occasion, Gaban was surprised to see his captain bow. Although contrary, Whitebeard accepted this request since Oden himself asked him, as he wanted to discover his family’s connection with these inscriptions.
In return, Roger’s Pirates left all their treasures and supplies to the rival crew, which in turn gave them back to him for the Kozuki family. Shortly thereafter, the crew noticed that both Inuarashi and Nekomamushi had also secretly boarded the ship to follow Oden.

The crew, already possessing Big Mom’s copy of her Road Poneglyph, reached Skypiea and returned to Water Seven. The crew then passed near Tequila Wolf and landed on the Sabaody Archipelago. While heading for Fish-Man Island, the ship was intercepted by Neptune.
After disembarking, the king told the pirates the prophecy that the island would be destroyed, fearing that that day would come, knowing the abilities of Roger himself. His fears grew when it was reported that a Sea King and the border bulla had damaged the gateway to the port. However, at that point, Shirley stated that the event would only occur after the birth of the mermaid princess.
Neptune then accompanied the pirates to the Sea Forest and showed them the two Poneglyphs, which Oden read. Here, Gaban reiterated to the king that they had nothing to do with the prophecy. Neptune then revealed everything he knew about the ancestral weapon of Poseidon. Later, Oden deciphered another Poneglyphs on a certain island, and the pirates landed in the Wano Country. Once there, Oden deciphered the information of the third Road Poneglyph and decided to leave Kozuki Toki and her two children there after the woman fell ill.
Even Inuarashi and Nekomamushi agreed to remain there while the daimyo continued his journey. Thus they later arrived at Zou, where Oden deciphered the last Road Poneglyph. Once in possession of all the information necessary to reach the last island, the crew reached it immediately. However, Buggy fell ill shortly before, so Crocus prevented him from setting sail for the final voyage.
Shanks decided to remain at his side. Thus, twenty-three years before the beginning of the narrative, the crew discovered what happened in the hundred years of the great void, the mystery behind the will of the D., and the truth about the three ancient weapons.
Once arrived in front of the infamous treasure, Gaban laughed along with all his crew. Precisely for this reason, they decided to name the island Raftel from “Laugh Tale.” Roger later thanked his crew and then disbanded them. After celebrating, Gaban was among those who offered his help to Oden to open the borders of the country of Wa, but the daimyo refused. Later, Roger was the first to abandon the ship. After taking Oden back to his homeland, Gaban separated from the other members.
