The treasure-hunting adventures of Nathan Drake aren’t over yet. Producer Charles Roven recently shared some exciting news—‘Uncharted 2’ is definitely happening. After the first movie hit theaters in 2022, starring Tom Holland as the young thief-turned-explorer and Mark Wahlberg as his mentor Victor ‘Sully’ Sullivan, we’ve been waiting for word on a sequel. Now we’ve got it, but there’s a catch. It might take a while before we see Nate swinging from cliffs again.

The original ‘Uncharted’ movie pulled in over $400 million at the box office, proving there’s a crowd eager for more. It wasn’t a straight copy of the PlayStation games by Naughty Dog, but more of an origin story. Holland played a younger Nate, teaming up with Sully to chase down Ferdinand Magellan’s lost treasure. They faced off against Santiago Moncada, played by Antonio Banderas, and a tough mercenary named Jo Braddock, brought to life by Tati Gabrielle. The film ended with a tease—Nate’s brother Sam, thought to be dead, was revealed to be alive in a prison cell, setting up a big reunion for the next chapter.

So what’s the holdup with ‘Uncharted 2’? It’s all about timing. Roven mentioned that a script is in the works, but Tom Holland’s schedule is packed. He’s currently tied up with a Christopher Nolan movie alongside Zendaya, set to release in 2026. Right after that, he’s jumping into ‘Spider-Man 4’. With those two massive projects lined up, ‘Uncharted 2’ has to wait its turn. Wahlberg’s availability as Sully could also play a role, though he’s already hinted at growing out his iconic mustache again for the part.

Sony confirmed back in June 2024 at CineEurope that the sequel was greenlit, so the wheels are turning. Holland and Wahlberg are expected to return, and Sophia Ali might be back as Chloe Frazer, Nate’s sharp-witted ally. Since Banderas and Gabrielle’s characters didn’t survive the first film, new villains are likely on the way. There’s talk of introducing Elena Fisher, Nate’s love interest from the games, and maybe even Pilou Asbæk as a bigger threat after his brief credits scene cameo as Gage. Sam’s return could drive the story, especially after that postcard warning Nate to ‘watch your back’.

The first movie mixed action with some wild stunts—like Nate falling from a cargo plane and walking away with barely a scratch. It wasn’t perfect for everyone, especially diehard game fans who didn’t love the casting or changes to the lore. Still, it found an audience, and I enjoyed it for what it was—a fun, popcorn flick. ‘Uncharted 2’ could lean more into the games, maybe pulling from ‘Drake’s Fortune’ with its hunt for El Dorado. That Nazi map from the credits scene hints at bigger adventures ahead.

For now, though, we’re stuck waiting. Holland was 25 when the first film dropped, and he’ll be pushing 30 by the time this sequel lands. That’s closer to the Nate we know from the games, which could work in the movie’s favor. Wahlberg, meanwhile, keeps playing the wise-cracking Sully, mustache or not. The long gap might even give the team time to polish the script and avoid rushing things.

I’m looking forward to seeing where they take Nate next, but it’s clear we’ll need some patience. ‘Uncharted 2’ is on its way—just don’t expect it anytime soon.
