Ryan Condal Just Confirmed His Next Targaryen Story Won’t Involve Dragons At All

The ‘House of the Dragon’ universe has spent years building toward its endgame, and the man steering that universe is starting to sound like someone ready to hand over the reins. Ryan Condal has spent nearly a decade inside George R.R. Martin’s Westeros, first as co-creator of ‘House of the Dragon’ and later shepherding the franchise through its most ambitious chapters yet. As the show barrels toward its conclusion, fans have been watching closely for any hint of what comes next for the man who has defined this era of the ‘Game of Thrones’ universe.

That anticipation has been building since ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3 wrapped, with Condal juggling press for the current season while already deep into plans for Season 4. HBO confirmed back in November 2025 that the fourth season would be the show’s final one, a decision Condal has reaffirmed multiple times since, including in an appearance on the Escape Hatch podcast. The season will consist of eight episodes and is expected to premiere on HBO and HBO Max in 2028.

Now Condal has made his most direct comments yet about stepping away from the franchise entirely. Speaking with Collider, the showrunner said, “I have really said all I have to or need to say about dragons and Targaryens and thrones.” It is a striking admission from the person who has overseen the franchise’s biggest battles, its bloodiest betrayals, and its most divisive creative choices, and it suggests Condal sees his time in Westeros as genuinely finite.

That said, Condal is not slamming the door completely. He told Collider the most interesting story left untold is the fall of the Targaryen dynasty, “but the one told from the point of view of the Targaryens themselves.” It is a telling distinction. Condal has clearly grown attached to the family at the center of this saga, even as he seems ready to close the book on the Dance of the Dragons once and for all.

Condal’s exit from the day to day grind of ‘House of the Dragon’ does not mean he is leaving HBO behind. He recently signed a major overall deal with the network running through 2029, marking what he has called the start of his “next chapter.” He has also promised that the final season will be “the biggest season we have made, for sure,” with production expected to begin in early 2027 following a lengthy writing process.

Season 4 will need to deliver on that promise while closing out one of television’s most scrutinized adaptations, all while its own showrunner signals he is ready to move on once the dragons finally stop flying. Fans have watched Condal steer this ship through triumphant highs and no shortage of controversy, and now they know his goodbye may double as his final word on Westeros as we know it. Do you think Condal should walk away from the Targaryens for good, or is a prequel about the dynasty’s fall too good to pass up?
