Sam Levinson’s Emotional Conversation With Zendaya About Rue’s Fate Reveals the Heart Behind ‘Euphoria’s’ Devastating Finale

Few series have ever made addiction feel as visceral and personal as ‘Euphoria.’ Over the course of three seasons, the HBO drama carved out a space in popular culture that was equal parts beautiful and brutal, anchored almost entirely by the raw, aching performance at its center. When the show finally came to a close, it did so with a choice that left audiences stunned and the creative team genuinely shaken.

‘Euphoria’ officially wrapped with its season three finale on May 31, with creator Sam Levinson confirming that the ending of the season was also the end of the series entirely. It was a goodbye that had been years in the making, and for the people who built this world, it was never going to be easy to navigate.

The most difficult conversation of all, it turns out, happened long before cameras rolled. Speaking to Variety’s Daniel D’Addario for the outlet’s “Half Hour With” series, Levinson opened up about how hard it was to pitch Rue’s death to Zendaya, describing the moment as one that carried enormous emotional weight for both of them. The scene he had to describe was the end of a character they had spent nearly a decade building together.

Levinson told Variety that even through the shoot itself, the decision continued to weigh on the two of them, but that Zendaya ultimately came to understand what he was trying to accomplish. He described the choice as feeling like the right way to honor Angus Cloud, someone he said the entire team loved deeply and believed in completely. Cloud, who played fan-favorite Fezco throughout the show’s first two seasons, passed away on July 31, 2023, at the age of 25.

During a dream sequence in the finale, Rue sees Fezco while she is overdosing, and the scene incorporates previously unseen footage featuring Cloud, making his presence in the episode all the more poignant. Levinson was direct about the thematic intention behind Rue’s ending, saying he wanted to tell an honest story for Angus and for people who were never granted a second chance. The showrunner also cited his conversation with the New York Times’ Popcast podcast as one of the forums where he elaborated further on how Cloud’s passing shaped the narrative direction of the final season.

Zendaya, for her part, addressed the end of the series with gratitude, telling the cast and crew in a behind-the-scenes moment that it had been a pleasure and an honor, and thanking many who had watched her grow up throughout the show’s run. That sentiment tracks with everything Levinson has said publicly about what she brought to the role. He called her a gifted actor whose work made Rue not just believable but genuinely charming, lovable, and humorous in ways that would not have been possible without her specific talents.

Levinson also revealed that filming Rue’s death scene was made more bearable by the presence of Colman Domingo on set, whom he described as one of his closest long-term collaborators and a grounding force for Zendaya throughout production. For Levinson personally, Rue’s fate was never about shock value but about reflecting a reality he knows intimately, stating plainly that people like Rue simply do not always make it, and that this was the only honest ending he could give her.

Whether you felt the finale honored Rue’s journey or left you wishing the show had found another way forward, it is clear this was a decision made with grief, love, and intention behind every frame. Share your thoughts below: was killing off Rue the ending her story truly deserved, or did ‘Euphoria’ owe its most beloved character a different kind of goodbye?
